We are often asked, "What are the Natural Flavors listed in the ingredients of our tea blends?" We'd like to take a moment and break it down for you:
NATURAL FLAVORS
Natural flavors are made from ingredients found in nature. They are created from natural sources such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, roots, leaves, flowers, and bark. These natural ingredients are carefully processed and concentrated into flavorings that help bring out or enhance the taste and aroma of foods. Our natural flavors are selected to complement the tea itself, providing a delicious and consistent flavor while maintaining the character of the original natural ingredient(s).
ORGANIC COMPLIANT
Not all natural flavors are the same. Natural flavors used in certified organic products must meet much stricter standards than conventional natural flavors. Organic-compliant natural flavors cannot contain many of the ingredients and processing aids commonly used in conventional flavorings, including synthetic solvents, artificial preservatives, and certain carriers and emulsifiers. They must also follow specific requirements regarding processing methods, solvents, irradiation, and genetically engineered ingredients.
All of our teas that contain natural flavoring use Organic Compliant Natural Flavors.
HOW NATURAL FLAVOR IS ADDED TO TEA
Our Organic Compliant Natural Flavors are carefully applied to the tea leaves during the blending process. The concentrated natural flavor is combined with a small amount of vegetable-derived ethyl alcohol, which allows the flavor to be evenly distributed throughout the tea. The mixture is then gently misted onto the tea leaves. As the tea dries, the alcohol evaporates completely, leaving behind the natural flavor infused into the tea leaves—not alcohol. The result is a flavorful, aromatic tea that allows you to enjoy the character of the natural ingredients alongside the tea itself.
SUMMARY
At The Churchwarden's Cellar, we strive to achieve the highest quality products for our consumers, while avoiding chemicals or artificial flavorings. While we often use Organic suppliers and ingredients, we do not classify our products as Organic (even if they are created using 100% organic materials), due to the additional government regulations that come with being certified as Organic. As we continue to grow and add new products to our line-ups, we will maintain a strict adherence to using only natural or organic-based ingredients.
