Curling Friends, with the curling season almost upon us….. here’s something the club’s ice techs are too shy to tell you. It is affecting the club’s ice quality.
Older, worn out grippers tend to peel off small pieces of rubber that can definitely cause picks. For someone curling once a week they should replace their gripper at least once a season. Keep an eye on the rubber to make sure it isn’t flaking off. Grippers are also being worn out from the inside. The teflon or metal sliders dig away at the inside of the gripper causing small pieces to break off and get onto the ice. When you remove the sliding foot gripper to throw make sure you wipe off your slider you will feel those small particles. Players should avoid getting to the point of flaking, peeling, bald spots and tears. Once that is occurring you are well overdue for a gripper. Often times when rocks are consistently picking it can be blamed on either dirty brooms heads or worn out grippers.
Also worn out Grippers can be very dangerous and result in slipping and bad falls.
