On your marks! Get set! GO!
A nonprofit has found an interesting way to raise money! Mouse racing!
While the competitors are tiny, the reason behind the evening is anything but. Our Place After School Care in Hastings is raising money toward a wheelchair-accessible van. Executive Director Adeline Johnson told me they’ve already filled their 15-passenger bus—and less than a year later, they need another vehicle.
Our Place serves both teens and adults with disabilities. It’s a place to spend the day, make friends and learn new skills. For caregivers, it also means having a safe, supportive place for someone they love.
The new 12-passenger van will cost about $60,000. Saturday’s mouse races are one way the community can help them get there.
And yes, we’re talking about actual mice racing down an enclosed track. Six races will lead to a grand championship, with games, prizes, a raffle, and a silent auction throughout the evening.
There’s also a derby hat contest. So if you’ve ever wanted to wear something ridiculous on your head while hollering for a mouse, your opportunity has arrived.
It’s happening Saturday, October 10, at the Eagles Club, 107 N. Denver Ave., in downtown Hastings. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and racing starts at 6.
Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door, subject to availability. Advance sales close Friday, October 9. You can get tickets online, or pay by cash or check at Our Place, 1117 E. South Street in Hastings.
