We got Steinbeck!

One of my absolute favorite writers of all time. The works of Steinbeck have been more impactful to me than those of almost any other writer.

Several titles are new in stock, including numerous copies of East of Eden, which many consider to be his greatest work.

I read through it this summer, and I can personally say it’s one of the best books I have ever read in my life.

Looking for something to keep a younger reader busy for a while?

I grabbed these copies of Artemis Fowl from the kids section and brought them up to the front so they get the attention they deserve.

I read these books myself as a kid and remember absolutely loving them. They are action packed books with fantasy elements (think Die Hard with fairies) but have more mature character arcs that are perfect for developing readers.

I was digging through the military history section and I found a few copies of The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien hiding in the back.

O’Brien is a Minnesota local and veteran of the Vietnam War. He wrote The Things They Carried in 1990 after feeling dismayed at the lack of understanding of the Vietnam War in his hometown.

This book blurs the line between memoir and historical fiction as O’Brien draws on his own experiences and places himself as the protagonist while blending elements of fiction and non-fiction.

In my personal opinion, this is an incredibly impactful book and an absolute must read even for those not as interested in military history. O’Brien is on par with the greats and would give Orwell, Steinbeck, or Hemingway a run for their money. Although I will say it’s not for the faint of heart!

When we get used books, we often find more than just the book itself. We can find pictures, coupons, bookmarks, letters, and notes within the books themselves. These are often a positive addition to the book itself.

When you buy one of these books, the memento becomes a part of its charm. History like this is hard to find with a brand new book. So stop by and take a look at a few books, see what personal history you can find.

Sassy and Tinker are tired of looking at some of these books in the store... They want them to go home with you instead!

Over the summer we have gained a wide variety of books through trade ins. Did you know that you can bring your books in for store credit towards another purchase? Although most people clean out their closets in the spring, it's never too late to bring your books down to us.

If you find a book collecting dust, or even a whole shelf full, trade it in for one you'll actually read. Ask our staff for a recommendation if you need one! Although they may ask for some pets in return.

It's no secret that we are in a historic area! After all, Hastings sits on the Mississippi National Scenic Riverway. If you don't know much or anything at all about the history of the river, we have plenty of books to serve that very need!

We have books on the people who lived on the river, those who worked on it, those who chose to settle along it, the vessels that traveled it long before modern boats, as well as the Indigenous peoples who continue to steward this land today. Water is an essential part of life, so its only fitting that there would be so many books regarding our big river!

Back to school season is here and we have every type of book to suit your needs! Our table has recently been culled to make our classics more accessible, with some piles sorted by author!

Don't let Tinker being pampered fool you, he is still naughty! But he is willing to help you find a book or two. Sassy might get up from a long nap to pick out the perfect book you have been looking for. After all, they know every book in the store!
