The Speakeasy Museum is back! Come learn the history of our bootlegging era in Havre de Grace and Maryland. Maryland was the only state in the USA that did not recognize Prohibition.
The only Speakeasy Museum in the country, dedicated to the history of Prohibition in Havre de Grace and the State of Maryland, has now relocated to Bahoukas Antique Mall & B**r Museum, 408 North Union Avenue, Havre de Grace, MD.
From 1919 - 1931 the booze was poured, made, and transported regularly, and freely, from Havre de Grace. No cops would bust anyone because our Governor would not prosecute! The Feds only came to HDG three times during this period. One of those visits resulted in the shooting death of one of our bootleggers.
We had fishermen, railroad men, cards rooms, billiard and pool rooms, pool halls, two famous houses of ill repute, and hidden rooms with betting boards for the racetrack season! There were boarding houses all over the city as everyone tried to take advantage of the racing season at the Graw. One of the only tracks in the country where you could drink!
Many of the Irish and Italians in Havre de Grace were making w**e and booze, or making money off of those who came to indulge in gambling, drinking, houses of ill repute, and all kinds of shenanigans.
Trying to get this history on video or paper was difficult. Ask anyone who knew the skivvy of the times and they just smile with a twinkle in their eye. Hard to get them to speak if they were involved! It was a city with a closed mouth! Their grandchildren repeat the stories they have heard!
Learn more about the times! And visit the cool B**r Museum too! Now located on the First Floor of Bahoukas Antiques & B**r Museum!
