These are probably some of the last flowers I’ll leave outside Ezra’s studio this year.

I started bringing them after he died. Nothing elaborate. Some of them were just small jars of zinnias. Just a little color outside the places where he left so much of it.

Somewhere along the way, it became a ritual of mine.

If I had flowers, they belonged to Ezra.
I cut them and took them in mason jars to his murals across the city every few days.

Soon there won’t be any left to bring to murals and his old studio door.

Grief is a season too, I suppose.

It’s all the love left over that endures. There will be more flowers, and more love, come Spring. 💚🌻

Tomorrow is Ezra’s public memorial. It’s at 3 pm at Graw Alley at Harmer’s Town Art Center.

Please, if being among others who loved him gives your grief somewhere to go, come.

But, you can also stay home if it would hurt too much. Ezra would never have wanted public memorials as a test of love. There is no right room, no required ritual and there’s no timeline to grieve. Ezra and I used to talk about death sometimes. We talked about how it’s just a transfer of energy.

Bloomies Havre de Grace has been honoring Ezra since early summer, when we closed for the season and devoted the flowers we grew to him.

We have carried and driven flowers to Ezra’s art in every kind of weather.

Ez spent his life giving beauty away, often without the recognition he deserved.

We will keep bringing him his flowers until the season ends.

I may not stay long at the public memorial tomorrow. I am grateful so many people in Havre de Grace will gather and say his name. He deserves that.

But my memorial to Ezra has been going on for months, and it is quieter.
I’ve gently packed away his voice, his riddles, our unfinished plans. I’ve ironed out which of the promises I will keep and I’ll keep cutting the flowers for him each day.

A memorial lasts an afternoon.

Love is what remains when everyone goes home.

Please check on your people. Then check on them a few more times. 💚

Ezra would sometimes text me: “You busy? I’m down at the ole cannery. Come on by.”

But it was always better when he said it out loud.

“Cannery” became “cann-rie,” in his unmistakable Midwestern-meets-Pennsylvania-Dutch cadence. If you knew Ezra, you can hear it.

For years, the lowest level of the historic Seneca Cannery was his second home (part art studio, part workshop, part gathering place, a sofa he sometimes napped on) Paint, ladders, unfinished ideas and long conversations.

Ezra had a way of making old, forgotten spaces feel alive simply because he was there, lighting it up, with his kind nature and positive energy.

Today, I walked up the deck to leave flowers by the door, and for a second I could almost hear him again:

“I’m down at the ole cann-rie.”

So I came on by.

I left flowers and a note for my buddy. The heart of Graw Alley.

We miss you Ez.

Some people leave light in every place they touch. ✨

Today, we left flowers for Ezra beside a frame in Graw Alley crafted by the talented JoAnn Teel. She’s both a local artist and executive director of the Friends of Concord Point Lighthouse.

JoAnn is talent, love and light. She was a true friend to Ezra while he was here, and she remains a true friend to me and to his memory. She saw the artist, but she also saw the man.

Long after the paint dried on the walls in Graw alley, these friendships remained. 💚
