Fresh produce, train lunches, and yes, even pet pigeons.

This late 1800s panier de ferme, or French market basket, was designed for everyday life. Its combination of wicker, metal, and leather made it sturdy, practical, and easy to carry over the shoulder.

Today, these baskets are rare and highly sought after by collectors. I love the glimpse into French social history, but I also love that it remains beautiful and completely functional more than a century later.
