Sometimes life has a funny way of changing the plans we make.

I was planning on running an auction tonight, but life had other ideas. Instead of going live, I thought we’d spend this Saturday night learning about one of my favorite pieces of history… the 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent. 🪙

When the Lincoln cent debuted in 1909, it was the very first regular U.S. coin to feature a real person instead of Lady Liberty. Designer Victor David Brenner proudly placed his initials, “V.D.B.”, on the reverse. People complained they were too noticeable, and the U.S. Mint removed them after only a short production run.

Here’s what makes it legendary:
✨ Only 484,000 were minted in San Francisco.
✨ It has become one of the most sought-after Lincoln cents ever made.
✨ Even well-worn examples can sell for hundreds of dollars, while high-grade coins can reach tens of thousands.

It’s amazing to think that one tiny design choice turned an ordinary penny into one of the most famous coins in American history.
