Is your garden showing signs of summer stress? Between intense heat and peak pest season, July can be tough on your landscape. A quick round of mid-summer triage will get your plants right back on track.

Start by deadheading spent flowers to encourage a fresh flush of blooms, and trim away any yellowing foliage.

Next, check your hanging baskets and containers. They dry out rapidly in the summer sun and need regular, water-soluble fertilizer to replenish lost nutrients.

Need help diagnosing a plant problem? Bring a photo of your troubled plant, and our team will help you find the right remedies to revive your garden!

Is your garden feeling the summer heat? Mid-July is the perfect time for a quick mulch refresh. A fresh two-inch layer of mulch instantly tidies up your landscape while doing some heavy lifting for your plants. It will help retain moisture so you water less, cool root systems during high-heat days, and block out pesky summer weeds. Plus, fresh mulch creates a clean backdrop that makes your current summer blooms instantly pop.

Have you considered growing hostas in containers? Here, we paired Shadowland® 'Love Story' hosta with Double Delight® Appleblossom begonias, Diamond Snow® euphorbia and Graceful Grasses® fiber optic grass in a part shade to full shade container.

Advantages to growing hostas in pots:
🌿Plant once and enjoy for several years before transplanting into your garden. Since they are hardy to zone 3, they overwinter well in containers in much of the country.

🌿Can keep them up out of the way of critters like browsing rabbits and deer

🌿Nice full plants for containers; makes a great thriller or filler

🌿A nice perennial alternative to Boston ferns for shade containers

🌿Many different varieties to choose from

🌿Easy to find in garden centers, even if you start your shopping late in spring

Stop by your local garden center to find Shadowland hostas for your containers this season or shop our online store (link in bio.)

If you are watering constantly but your plants are still drooping, the secret isn't watering more often. It is watering deeper. Hot summer watering is all about pushing moisture down to where the roots need it.
Frequent, shallow watering keeps roots near the scorching surface, where they quickly dry out. Instead, give your garden a slow, thorough soak less frequently. This coaxes roots to grow deep into cooler, moisture-rich soil. For the best results, water early in the morning before the heat of the day causes major evaporation.

When you think of pollinators for your garden, butterflies and honeybees easily pop into mind. But there are actually more than 200,000 species of insects and animals that pick up and transfer pollen as they feed. You might spot flies, ants, beetles, moths, wasps or even bats doing this important work if you look carefully. Every creature plays a role.

Thanks to pro photographer Nic Bectel of Grand Haven, Michigan for capturing this amazing closeup of Flambe® Yellow strawflower in the act of being pollinated.
