Boneset is budded & blooming 🤩

Common Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) is blooming now in fields, wetland margins, and roadsides. This widespread native herb is available at native plant sales and works well in pollinator gardens. Common Boneset provides food for a wide range of bees, wasps, flies, butterflies, and moths.

The ‘perfoliatum’ specific epithet of its scientific name describes how the stem passes through the leaf (per- means through; folium means leaf). This trait also led to its common name of Boneset. According to the Doctrine of Signatures line of thinking, the physical appearance of a plant indicates its medicinal effect on humans. Thus, two leaf halves joined across a stem suggested that ingesting Boneset will help heal broken bones.
