LightArted laurie and jeffrey childres Small scale 3-dimensional assemblages, utilizing repurposed bits & pieces, to create functional, decorative & wearable sculptural art works sure to delight

Laurie Childres of Hickory, NC, a self-taught, multidisciplinary artist whose unique ideas stem from an inability to toss out interesting objects, creates shiny tiny pieces utilizing mixed media for the simple pleasure of delighting the senses. Collaborating with husband, Jeffrey, as in-house engineer, in their home studio, she enjoys designing and bringing to life the ideas that crawl out of her

head. Our one-of-a-kind handcrafted pieces known as Lighting bugs/beadles, adornaments, lizard pins and adornable pins are created using primarily reclaimed, re-purposed and reused materials to become upcycled joyful baubles that are sure to fascinate the appreciator. Our award-winning Lighting bugs/beadles have appeared in juried shows far and wide. The Foothills Folk Art Festival has embraced our whimsy by continually inviting us to take part in their annual show in Newton, NC. We displayed in the Ciel Gallery of Charlotte, The Bandon Library Annual Mosaic Art Show in Bandon, Oregon and Full Circle Arts Gallery in Hickory. Our shiny tiny beadles and Lighting bugs have been well received at art events such as The Downtown Hickory Art Crawl and the Hiddenite Celebration of the Arts. Some of our Lighting bugs/beadles have made themselves adornable by being transformed into wearable art in our ‘Time Flies’ series of pins, which each display parts of time pieces and wings. These smaller versions are a unique reminder that minutes are fleeting and each one must be appreciated. Remember that time flies like crazy; fruit flies like bananas. Also included in our line of adornables are our lizard pins. These fanciful, dressed to impress lizards are wonderful conversation starters and make extraordinary accessories. Adornaments, useful as fan & light pulls, sun catchers and ornaments, are brilliant pieces of art that will bring sparkle to your life. These colorful adorable ornaments, hence ‘adornaments’, are enjoyable as a single piece or as a grouping. Many a holiday tree has been adorned with our adornaments! They make lovely gifts. All of these small scale assemblages, utilizing repurposed bits & pieces, in an effort to create functional, decorative and wearable arts, are totally unique works, are 100% original and we are truly proud to share them with you. While animals’ evolutionary techniques are frequently out of the ordinary, certain spiders take it to a whole new level. Spiders have developed in such a manner that they may acquire features that help them hunt while also allowing them to escape being preyed upon. When we examine different spider...

🕷️ Also, male peacock spiders perform a colorful song and dance nearly unrivaled in the animal kingdom. But a study shows that their main audience—the females they aim to woo—don’t impress so easily.
When a male peacock spider thinks he has spotted a female, “the world pretty much disappears,” says Michael Kasumovic of Australia’s University of New South Wales, one of the study’s co-authors. The spider then begins a series of dances—including moves scientists have dubbed the “rumble-rump” and “grind-rev”—that send literal good vibrations through the ground toward the female.

Once he has piqued her interest, the male unfolds a brilliantly colored abdominal flap and then struts back and forth, all the while frantically waving specially colored lengthy legs.

_____

💃 Females don’t automatically swoon to the males’ advances, instead turning toward or away from them during their initial vibrations, based on interest. Some females also had more aggressive responses, rebuffing males with quick shakes of their abdomens—or worse. If females don’t like a male, they’ll eat them.
The females liked only 16 of the 64 courtship dances.
Oh and, males’ looks are about twice as important as their dance moves, though each plays a slightly different role in piquing and retaining a female’s interest.
