One of our favorite parts of having a local bookstore is celebrating local voices. Today at 4pm, we’re happy to host this month’s Highland Park Poetry gathering, with featured poets Charlotte Digregorio and Trudy Kleckner, with a poetry open mic to follow—come bring a poem you want to share so the group can celebrate your voice!

Gayle sadly won’t be able to attend today because she’ll be telling a story at the Story Sessions storytelling event at the historic (and gorgeous) Paul Shweikher house in Schaumburg. If you want to make the trek, you can get tickets via the The Schweikher House website!

Here’s to local voices and poetry and storytelling! 💖

It’s Banned Books Week, a heartbreaking week that shouldn’t need to exist, but because it does, we want to use it to protest (and raise awareness about) censorship and celebrate our freedom to read. Our display here features books and gifts with a banned books theme as well as books that have been challenged, including middle grade novels by local author Ami Polonsky and our own Gayle Brandeis! In addition to items for sale, you can pick up free bookmarks, stickers, and pins protesting censorship provided by American Booksellers for Free Expression!
