Love this industry. Meeting people and learning from experts. Talked to a brother today who is a legit pro in Restoration and bookbinding of old Bibles and I am fascinated by his work and his family’s business as he and his brother carrying on the family tradition. R103 started…. Yikes! This 14 x 11 inch monster is a Church Bible found in storage at a dear church to me in Oklahoma where a close brother used to preach.

The text block is in decent condition, but somehow lost is concave structure and is now uneven and must be re-structured. The seen signatures feel almost like fishing line as it is justifiably thick/strong thread.

I don’t think I’ll be able to fit this into any book press as the text block is 4 inches thick. I’d love to figure a way to preserve the spine but it is brittle and already a mess. It does appear a rebinding/repair has already been attempted and I don’t want to be too disparaging as I can already see the challenges involved with a bible this size.

I think the path forward is to replace the spine hopefully using pieces from the old one. Clean up the front and back cover and then rebuild hinge support and reinforced spine to cover connectivity.

Big job ahead.

R102 complete: This family Bible is absolutely gorgeous on the inside and out. But time crept up and made the outside cover brittle and breaking.

I replaced with a blue Rivergrain goat and was very careful to preserve the original and sheet/liner paintings which are my favorite part of this Bible.

This beautiful blue Family Bible looked like it just needed hinge repair, but this giant had a hangover problem. Its 3/4 yap (hangover) was very brittle and cracked in multiple places and even missing a section.

To complicate is saving the beautiful inside cover paintings on the front and back liner/end pages. So decided to carefully deconstruct and rebind a new blue goatskin cover inlaying the old cover face into the new and distinguishable parts of the spine.

Now to get this beautiful treasure put back together.

R98 Complete- This NIV Thinline was one of my favorites. Not necessarily hard, but time consuming on the text block and loved the stark difference in size and obviously ascetics.

This brother USED his bible and carried with him a lot, thus the bible took the wear and tear like a champ. But it was definitely time for a rebind and facelift.

This cover is Rhin Green goat skin from Tandy leather.

R104 Complete - Family Bible - this was interesting as we attempted to save as much of the old cover as possible, but then used a special leather selected from a special leather shop in Denton with special meaning.

R99 Complete - This faithfully well used Scofield needed a little TLC and a new cover. Enjoyed do this bible for a fantastic couple which led to another Family Bibile.
