Rebind 107 complete- This 1867 compact bible is a beauty, but the old over had been worn thin. And the edges and spine were in pieces.

I re-stained the cover boards to the old brown original color and then inserted them into a new leather cover with new spine.

Loved this project.

R103 complete: This church bible was sent from a special church dear to me from Oklahoma.

This is a rebind, (not a restoration) to make it a functioning bible. I rebuilt the text block spine and then created leather hinges. I did a lot of reinforcement on the inside because the bible is so big and heavy… basically doing both an edge line, with a pastedown over the top.

On the outside, I cleaned it, then touched up the worn areas. Then used the old spine cover within an insert window to preserve the old look and stamping.

I was able to get the clasps to close again. Happy about that. Overall a fun project. I learned a lot and was able to bend the ear of a professional for some advice and direction.

What I love about this hobby/craft, i’m just
finishing up an 1867 compact for a family in Kansas, and a brand new Westminster Reference bible, for a pastor in California, while halfway through a 1920’s Church Lectionary Bible for a church in Oklahoma…. Totally different applications, totally different materials, same Word of God.

Love this industry. Meeting people and learning from experts. Talked to a brother today who is a legit pro in Restoration and bookbinding of old Bibles and I am fascinated by his work and his family’s business as he and his brother carrying on the family tradition. Check out Artur Bookbinding out of Ft Gibson OK.

R103 started…. Yikes! This 14 x 11 inch monster is a Church Bible found in storage at a dear church to me in Oklahoma where a close brother used to preach.

The text block is in decent condition, but somehow lost is concave structure and is now uneven and must be re-structured. The seen signatures feel almost like fishing line as it is justifiably thick/strong thread.

I don’t think I’ll be able to fit this into any book press as the text block is 4 inches thick. I’d love to figure a way to preserve the spine but it is brittle and already a mess. It does appear a rebinding/repair has already been attempted and I don’t want to be too disparaging as I can already see the challenges involved with a bible this size.

I think the path forward is to replace the spine hopefully using pieces from the old one. Clean up the front and back cover and then rebuild hinge support and reinforced spine to cover connectivity.

Big job ahead.
