The fireworks are ready. The sparklers are lit. The lemonade is chilling on the porch.
And somewhere, just beyond the glow of the backyard lanterns, the previous occupants of the house are quietly judging your grilling technique.
There is something about a Fourth of July evening that feels thinner than ordinary nights. The warm breeze carries music from three streets over. Fireflies drift through the yard like wandering embers. Old houses settle and creak as they always have, though perhaps not always for the reasons we've told ourselves.
Porch swings move when the air is perfectly still.
An empty rocking chair gives a gentle sway.
Someone standing beside you seems very interested in the fireworks despite not appearing in any of the family photographs.
If you hear an extra voice joining in during the patriotic songs, simply smile and carry on. Some traditions are older than the nation itself, and some guests have been attending the celebration for much longer than anyone realizes.
From all of us at Totally 'Not' Haunted, we wish you a wonderful Fourth of July filled with family, friends, good food, beautiful fireworks, and only the expected number of unexplained footsteps on the stairs after everyone has gone to bed.
🎆 Happy Fourth of July, and remember — if the attic starts applauding after the grand finale, it is only being polite. 🎆
