Hillsdale General Store & HGS Home Chef

Hillsdale General Store & HGS Home Chef Hillsdale General Store is a historic country emporium with two floors of unique finds. Back in the day, every town in America had a General Store.

HGS Home Chef is our carefully curated Kitchen Store & Cooking School right across the street. It was a gathering place where noses were pressed up against the candy counter and local news was shared around a potbelly stove. The Hillsdale General Store is a twenty-first century version of that idea, filled with useful and beautiful things for country life on two full floors. Right across the street is HGS Home Chef, our new kitchen store and cooking school. In our two gorgeous teaching kitchens we present the best and brightest in the food world. From hit cookbook authors to amazing chefs, our line up of teachers are world class but completely approachable. Both our stores are beautiful and filled with things you can't live without. We welcome all within our doors and hope to see you soon!

In case you couldn’t come, join me now inside for a peek of our day-long celebration of the 15th anniversary of our store. Music from Luke Franco, Jenny Elliott & Son, our local flower farmers of Tiny Hearts Farm and Tiny Hearts Flower Shop . There was c***r and cookies, a toasty fire in the wood stove, loads of new and old friends, many who were at our opening day 15 years ago. With Old Henry parked out front and keeping an eye on things from the window, both floors of the shop were rockin’. Thank you to all who were here to help Paul, Lulu and me celebrate. HeyHillsdaleNY

The 15th and FINAL EPISODE of the countdown to our 15th anniversary which we will be celebrating on Sat Oct 17th with music, cookies, c***r and Halloween candy for the kids. This final reel in the series is for Paul Amash who sought me out at soon as he heard a store was going in Vinny’s old video store. He was dogged and determined and was hired to help set up the store weeks before we opened as paper covered the windows to shield our to-doing’s from the public’s view until we were ready to reveal it. It was an exciting time following a long restoration of the building and a year of planning, searching, procuring and realizing my dream of a store inspired by Dimmicks, the historic business in my dreams that was very real. So thank you Paul for being there then, and for being there today. Paul Amash Jr

EPISODE 14, (the penultimate) of 15 as we gear up for our 15th anniversary which will be celebrated at the store this Sat, Oct 17th. Here I share a relic of the Dimmick family who rain this general store for over 100 years. I could very well be wrong that this belonged to a male member of the family. It might have belonged to Anna Dimmick, wife of Theopolis, the son of the founder, Eliphalet. (Members of the Dimmick family feel free to chime in!). In any case it is a delightful 19th century piece with original paint. We hope to see you all at the store on Oct 17th for nibbles and music as we celebrate our anniversary. EPISODE 13 of our countdown to our 15th anniversary which we will be celebrating on Sat, Oct 17th (please come!). In this segment we give a nod to Window William who is in many ways the face of the company. He’s so much more than a Strong Silent Type spokesmodel. Watch and see why….

As we recount the history of this historic building it would be impossible to leave out Vinnie Owens. Vinnie worked in this building for fifty years, starting in the early sixties as a young man when it was a sporting goods shop. Finally he was known and beloved for the video store, the final business here before we turned it back into a general store. Thank you Vinnie, your history here is deeply appreciated. HeyHillsdaleNY

EPISODE 11! in the countdown to 15 in celebration of our 15th anniversary happening this Saturday Oct 17th where we hope you’ll join us for the celebration. In this episode I read from the 1866 ledger of our store and note that we sell the same things here today. Folks need what they need and our shop endeavors to fulfill that with what we have in the shop today. HeyHillsdaleNY Columbia County NY

In a sweet historic hamlet, where the Hudson Valley kisses the Berkshires, you’ll find a general store built in 1855. Both floors are loaded with carefully curated treasures, new and old, and organized like a rural department store. Some call it an emporium. Housewares, vintage kitchen, candy, toys and puzzles, fancy goods, barware, body and bath, stationery, tabletop, attire, pet goods and antiques are some of the categories. Soon the store will be bursting with gifts and decorations for the holidays. We hear every day, from the nicest people, that there’s simply nothing like Hillsdale General Store. Hours are 10-5 Wed-Sunday.
