For some of New York’s most delicious barbecue chicken, a stop by Brooks’ House of Bar-B-Q in Oneonta is tough to top! The Brooks family got its start raising poultry before moving into catering, and their first Oneonta restaurant opened in 1961 with just 80 seats. Today, Brooks’ is best known for chicken cooked over real charcoal on a huge 38-foot indoor pit, filling the restaurant with that unmistakable smoky smell. The buffet makes it easy to build a full meal, with hot and cold sides, bakery items, and choices like chicken, pulled pork, brisket, and ribs. Mac and cheese, hush puppies, biscuits, salads, and desserts round things out nicely. Brooks’ has grown into a true Upstate New York landmark while keeping its old-school, family-run feel. In 2016, the James Beard Foundation honored it with an America’s Classics Award. Before heading out, you can also grab a bottle of Brooks’ sauce to take home.
