Red Hill General Store

Red Hill General Store Not many authentic general stores are left-- but the thrill & experience of visiting Red Hill in Hillsville is an old fashioned delight.

We will never claim to be a perfect company, but we will address difficult issues and strive to be honest about our ability or inability to resolve them. Responsible product supply, labeling and distribution infrastructure is an ongoing social challenge. We hand-pick products with trusted standards we've learned over time. We encourage product manufacturers to reduce product impact and uphold qual

ity and affordability. While we want you to always choose to purchase from us because you love our products, we want you to feel good about where it's from. Our customer service, shipping department, and retail store team members earn good wages for workers in the United States; which is in sharp contrast to the 20 cents per hour wages of call centers and internet shipping business abroad. Operating retail stores responsibly in America requires risk taking and long-term investment. The industry's relentless and blind pursuit of the lowest possible wages cannot be sustained over time. Moreover, providing markets for local commodities is critical to thriving communities. There is satisfaction in being an independently owned and operated small business which uses local resources sustainably, employs workers at decent wages and meaningfully serves community citizens. Whether you live nearby or are just passing through we invite you to stop by our store in Hillsville, VA. Throughout our stores you’ll find name brands you know and love. We are authorized dealers of, WR Case knives, All American Canners, Rada knives, Presto cookers and canners, White Mountain, Jelly Belly jelly beans, and more. But even if you do not live nearby, you can still enjoy a Red Hill experience online at: http://redhillgeneralstore.com

πŸƒπŸ‘‘ Leaf Princess Crown πŸ‘‘πŸƒ

There's magic in what the mountains give us at summer's end. Here's a little leaf crown craft we did as kids that costs nothing.

It starts with a short walk outside to gather your treasures. Here in the Blue Ridge, with over 50 species of Virginia forest trees, your leaf choices for texture are many! We love oak and maple, but every leaf brings its own shape and charm. You'll need about 10 leaves for a crown.

Summer's wildflowers will fade soon, but keep your eyes open β€” you can still find black-eyed Susans, Queen Anne's lace, yarrow, and daisies in bloom. 🌼

Bring your collection back to the porch and fold your leaves over small twigs, flat reed, or even pipe cleaners. Layer them up and sew them together with a yarn needle and twine. Our favorite is food-grade Cotton Twine that we keep in stock at just $3.49, and one roll really lasts! (We stock lots of other twines and strings too.)

A beautiful afternoon, a walk in the mountain air, and a crown made for free from the land itself.

🍌 BACK TO SCHOOL, Y'ALL! 🐡

You know how it goes... you pack a nice banana in the lunchbox, and by the time they open it up, it's a brown, squished mess β€” brought back home as a mushy science experiment at the bottom of the backpack. What a waste!

Well, we've got the fix. It's a Banana Saver! This little monkey case keeps your banana safe from lunchboxes, locker slams, tractor rides, and whatever else the day brings. πŸ’

And it's just $4.99! Dishwasher safe too (top rack), so cleanup's easy.

Around here we don't throw good food away β€” and we're tired of scraping banana off of everything! Pack a healthy banana to-go.

Come on in and grab one or, even, a few!

🌻 How to Shine Up That Old Aluminum Canner 🌻

We get asked all the time how to clean up an old aluminum pot. Here's our tried-and-true way, simple as can be:

1. Wet down the outside of the pot with a little water.
2. Sprinkle on Bar Keepers Friend or Bon Ami.
3. Scrub in circles with a damp cloth or sponge - a little elbow grease does the trick.
4. Rinse clean and dry.

That's it. One step, and it'll be shinin' like new.

⚠️ One important thing: Don't scrub the sealing surfaces. Where your gasket sits and the lid meets the pot. Just wipe those areas down with hot soapy water instead. Keep 'em smooth and clean so your canner seals up tight and safe.

We found this canner at a thrift store for $15 and cleaned it up with Bar Keepers Friend - just look at that shine!

We keep both Bar Keepers Friend and Bon Ami stocked on our shelves, and we carry all the rubber gaskets and replacement parts to keep your canner safe all season long.

Some of the best meals don't come from a kitchen... they come from a campsite, hunting camp, backyard cookout, or a cabin tucked back in the woods.

There's just something about cooking outside that makes food taste better. We've stocked up on camp stoves, outdoor burners, high-pressure cookers, and barrel stove kits to help keep the good mealsβ€”and good memoriesβ€”coming.

Around here, good food and a crackling fire have a way of bringing folks together. The only hard part is deciding who's doing the cooking... and who's doing the dishes.

The tomatoes are ripening. The cucumbers are piling up. You know what that means... canning season is officially in full swing!

It's always the little things that make the job easier. We've stocked the shelves with the supplies that keep generations of home canners coming back:

Pickle Crisp & Xtra Crunch for crunchier pickles
Classic and Low/No-Sugar Pectin for jams and jellies
Citric Acid for safely canning tomatoes
Lids, bands, reusable lids, labels, fruit preservers, pickling spices, and more

Around here, a pantry full of home-canned food isn't just about saving the harvestβ€”it's about opening a jar in the middle of winter and remembering what summer tasted like.

If you're getting ready to fill your shelves, stop by and see us. We'd love to help you get everything you need before the busiest part of the season!

πŸ… It's tomato pie season in Carroll County!

Garden-fresh tomatoes, basil, sweet onions, and plenty of cheese... this is what August tastes like around here.

We're sharing one of our favorite tomato pie recipes below. Around here, it's a summertime tradition that disappears almost as fast as it comes out of the oven.

Now settle a friendly debate for us... is tomato pie the taste of summer perfection, or are you in the "why would you do that to a pie crust?" camp? πŸ˜„ Be honest!

Tomato Pie - Serves 6
4 tomatoes, peeled and sliced
8-10 fresh basil leaves, chopped
1/3 cup chopped green onion
one 9 inch prebaked deep-dish pie shell
salt and pepper to taste
2 cups grated mozzarella and cheddar cheese (combined)
1 cup mayonnaise

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Layer tomato slices, basil, and onion in pie shell. Add salt and pepper to taste. Mix together grated cheeses and mayonnaise. Spread on top of tomatoes. Bake for 30 minutes or until lightly browned.

In a country kitchen, the mason jar might just be the hardest-working thing in the cupboard.

This week alone, it's probably been a canning jar, a sun tea pitcher, an iced tea glass, a juice cup, a meal-prep container... and yes, even a laundry helper.

Great-grandma knew what she was doing. One jar, a hundred jobs.

What's the most unusual thing YOU use a mason jar for? Wrong answers welcome. πŸ˜„

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign...

Around here, we've all seen a yard sale sign made from an old cardboard box and a black marker. And honestly? They get the job done.

But if you'd rather skip the scissors and duct tape this time, we've got ready-to-go signs for yard sales, private property, parking, directions, and just about everything else.

One thing folks in Appalachia have always known is that a good sign can save a whole lot of explaining.

We'll take care of the sign... you can take care of pricing all those treasures in the garage.

What was the funniest homemade sign you've ever seen along the side of the road? We know there are some good ones out there!
