Colleen owns Cottonwood Soap Company, and she makes the most gorgeous handcrafted soaps and bath products right here on Hilton Head Island. And I don’t mean ‘cute little hobby soaps.’ She has built an actual business—more than 10,000 orders! Ten. Thousand. Shopify sent her an award and everything.

She started making soap because nothing helped her husband’s eczema or her own horribly cracked heels. So, naturally, instead of just complaining about it like the rest of us, she figured out how to make something better. Now she creates all these beautiful coastal scents that make your bathroom smell like you’re staying at a fancy beach resort where nobody expects you to cook dinner.

Hilton Head Beach is her bestseller—and yes, you need it. She also makes lotion bars, Happy Heels, gift sets, and this Soap Sampler that is frankly genius because choosing only one scent is unreasonable.

There’s a story behind every bar of Cottonwood soap. And it didn’t start with a business plan.

I made my first batch of soap in 2018 because I was looking for something better for the skin issues we were dealing with at home.

At the time, I was still practicing law in Cincinnati. I certainly wasn’t planning my next career as a soap maker.

But I became fascinated by the process—how the oils, ingredients and fragrances came together, and how different handmade soap felt from the detergent-based bars we had been accustomed to using.

Then life changed.

I retired from practicing law at the end of 2019, moved to Hilton Head Island, and what had started as a personal project slowly became Cottonwood Soap Company.

And Hilton Head became part of its DNA.

The salt air. The water. The slower pace you feel when you’re near the coast. Those are the things that inspire so many of the products I create and even the names they carry.

My goal isn’t simply to make soap.

I want that Hilton Head Beach bar sitting in your shower to give you a tiny reminder of vacation on an ordinary Tuesday morning. I want opening a Cottonwood package to feel like a little something you did just for yourself.

And I still make our products in small batches right here on Hilton Head Island.

Eight years after making that first batch, I never would have predicted where it would lead.

But I can’t imagine a better second chapter.
