Male or female chickadee? Here's a secret: even expert birders usually can't tell!
Most birds give it away with color — brighter males, duller females. Not black-capped chickadees. Males and females look virtually identical: same black cap, same white cheeks, same soft gray back. No cheat codes here. 🫤
So how do birders tell them apart? Behavior is your best clue:
Listen for the song — Only males sing the clear, whistled "fee-bee" song. If you hear it, you're listening to a male.
Watch the nest — Only females build the nest and incubate the eggs. If you see one excavating a cavity or sitting tight on a nest, that's your female.
Watch who's feeding whom — During incubation, males bring food to the female on the nest. A chickadee being fed by another chickadee is almost always the female.
So next time you're watching your feeder, don't feel bad if you can't tell who's who — nobody can, just by looking! -Nick

We have a new feeder that is specifically made for our cute seed critters, old and new, and it comes in two beautiful colors, bronze and red. It is also very versatile as it can hold both a small and large sized cylinder. Sunny the Goldfinch is pictured just waiting to be eaten!

Guess who I’m seeing at my feeders right now, — Yellow-rumped Warblers!! Look for the bright flash of yellow at the base of their tail, affectionately nicknamed the “Butterbutt”.
They love spreadable Bark Butter. I look for them every fall and winter. They’re one of my favorites. - Dorothy

In the Northern Hemisphere, the First Day of Autumn is Tuesday, September 22. That's when the length of day and night are almost the same. Be sure your feeders are ready for some hungry birds that are either preparing or recharging for the longer nights.
