Narrow Pines Homesteaders, LLC We are a small homestead in Hollis, NH dedicated to becoming closer to our roots. Farm Stand open Saturdays from 8:30am - sundown or until sold out.

We also offer eggs, etc for pickup during the week. Ask us about our ethically and humanely raised chicken, duck, turkey, and rabbit! We raise our birds and rabbits in small batches and process three times per year: July, September, and November. Reach out for availability and to arrange pickup. 🍗 We still have a few chickens left in the freezer, and reservations for fresh chicken are still happening as well. Pasture-raised, free-range, and antibiotic/hormone/vaccine-free.

🫑 The first bell peppers are in - there's only a few for now, but we're hoping to bring you more produce soon.

We've got a lot of good things happening this week! 🤗

Eggs & banana bread are sold out - thank you! 🥰
🔜 There's plenty more where that came from, and we'll be restocking the fridge come the weekend.

🐝🌸 Our local, raw honey is also sold out for now, but there is more coming, we promise! 🤲

The potted garden on the deck is popping off after all that rain, so we're hoping to offer a wider variety of fresh cut herbs starting this weekend as well. 🪴

This tiny (and beautiful 😍) egg is called a fairy egg, and it represents a culmination of effort that began in March of this year. We'll be seeing more of them moving forward, and it is not a bad thing! This little egg means that this year's pullets (young female chickens) are beginning to lay.

We raised three groups of chicks this year beginning in March with out annual Egg Watch hatch, another with pullets from a large hatchery in April, and also our Kindergarten Klass hatch in early June. 🐣🐥🐣

The Egg Watch babies are reaching maturity, and we're pretty egg-cited about it. We cannot wait to see what wonderful colors come from these beautiful young hens! 🩵💚🤎🩷🤍

I have sad news to report...

I was debating on posting anything, but I feel I owe it to our followers to share the good, the bad, and the ugly. Homesteading & farming are not all sunshine & rainbows and it would be irresponsible to lead anyone to believe that it is. And I didn't want to leave anyone wondering why there were no more updates on our recent hatch.

So here goes:
Nasti did a horrible thing the other day. She ƙïllẹɗ her babies. All of them. I suspect that we left her with the chicks for too long. She was an excellent mother up until this point.

Animal husbandry is a hard path to walk. You can do all the reading & research you want, but a good deal of learning comes from hands-on experience, and that means to some extent, at the expense of some of the animals. It is an unfortunate reality and the one thing I struggle most with.

We can only learn from our experience and move on. During previous experiences, our Momma hen kept her babies close for much longer, but they also were not confined as long because our flock was smaller.

Chickens can be ruthless & savage little creatures. This does not mean that Nasti is a bad hen. It was my error to keep her with her babies longer than necessary. I accept that responsibility.

All eyes are on Momma Oh-gee now. She will be allowed to raise her babies until they no longer need her for warmth, and then for the safety of her littles, we will separate them. This is not a lesson I would like to repeat!

We do the best we can until we know better. Once we know better, it is up to us to do better.

In my burnout post, I mentioned that there were some projects I've been wanting to get done around the homestead. Since the animals are mostly off my plate for the time being, I've been able to focus a little more energy on getting some of them started. Some are practical ideas to make our work easier, and others are more for fun.

Here's my weekly recap (lite):

📸 Got a second feeder off the ground & hung up using an old 2x4 I found in the yard, twine from a bale of hay, and a free swag carabiner out of the junk drawer; and unintentionally created a bonus roost where the birds can be outside but stay dry when it rains. Just call me MacGyver. 🖇
📸 Had a little fun with my screw gun and added a little outdoor décor. I might have a slight addiction to Prime dopamine mining when I've got the blues. You may notice a few new signs if you visit. 🚸
📸 I've been tending the potted herb garden that Matt planted from seeds I started in the spring. It's on the deck, close by, and is easier than going down to the garden. I'm really enjoying it. 🪴
🐖 Matt & I picked up a pig food mega-haul from our friends at the food pantry this week. He had a day off, so he came with me. We took his truck, which fits considerably more than my little Tacoma. I like when he comes with me because he took me for ice cream before we went home. 🍨

There's a lot more to do around here. A lot more I want to do. I've picked back up my regular responsibilities with the animals (minus the pigs) one day a week, sometimes two if needed and based on how I feel.

Momma Nasti & The Liberty Chicks 🗽🎆🎇

We relocated our little family to the brooder in the garage Saturday night. The little ones are mostly feathered and would be off-heat at this point. They still go under Nasti at night, so we kept everyone together for the time being.

Boston (white) & Murica (striped) are looking suspiciously boy-ish, but I am pretty sure Indie (dark) is female. They all have very strong personalities. Indie managed to escape capture and went on a little adventure in the yard and under the deck. It took about 15 minutes, but we were able to catch her and get Momma & babies safely to their new enclosure.

Here in the garage, they will grow out until they are big enough to hold their own in the main flock. Nasti will get a leg band so we can tell her apart. We hope she will continue to be an outstanding mother in the future. 🐔🪺🐣

Let's talk about burnout...

I've hinted at it in a few posts recently, have definitely been less present on socials, but haven't really said much about what's going on and why.

It's a pretty common thing among folks like me, or so it would seem. It doesn't mean that we don't still love what we do, it just means that we've been doing too much for too long.

I see it all the time; farmers over-extending themselves for whatever reason. This profession is addicting, after all. And then I see the fallout - declining health of animals, drastic herd or flock reductions, and sometimes an all out collapse of the farm as a whole.

I don't want that for my animals, and I don't want that for my farm.

Burnout is very, very real. I have a long history of it, suffering it to one degree or another in almost every "real" job I've ever held. Farming was different. It was a release, therapeutic, fun...
.. but it is also hard work - LOTS of it. And it is very hard to get away from it.

I don't really want to get away from it, not for long. I don't want to stop doing it. But I do need a break. And that is ok.

Recovering from burnout takes time, patience, and rest. I don't mean sleeping all the time, though I am doing more of that than usual (and yes, it feels good). I'm talking about doing the things I love to do when I'm not farming - art, writing, and maybe some long overdue home care.

I've been neglecting myself for a very long time. Self-love is the antidote.

I am so grateful to have the support of my loving husband and stepson. They have been doing the heavy lifting while I have been taking time to heal, create, and care for myself.

It has been about a two months since i took leave of my regular duties. Being with the animals has started to become therapeutic again already. I enjoy the time I spend with them, talking to them, giving them treats, and hopefully soon getting some fun projects done that have been waiting far too long on the back burner.

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone for their continued support, both online & in-person, of our small farmstead and for sticking with us through all of our challenges the past couple of years (we have sure had our share).

I am still committed to bringing you all with us on this journey through our social media. I will continue to post content as I feel up to it. The Porch will continue to be open regular hours unless specified otherwise on our page.

I appreciate your kindness & understanding while I focus on getting myself back on track.
