Gene Tierney as Ellen Berent in Leave Her to Heaven (‘45). 🕶

Her chilling performance in this Technicolor noir earned Tierney an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, ultimately losing to Joan Crawford for Mildred Pierce (‘45).

Reflecting on the nomination, Gene later wrote:
“My own disappointment was lessened by the conviction, new to me, that I had developed a difficult character and not just a pretty face on the screen. I had been challenged by the role, and to have been nominated for an Oscar was excitement enough.”

Leave Her to Heaven went on to win the Academy Award for Best Color Cinematography, and its bold use of vibrant Technicolor remains one of the film’s most striking features.
