NOMAR Anything and everything involving sewing since 1978. Apparel, bags, commercial fishing gear, boat enclosures, boat upholstery, zipper repairs, and more!

In 1978, NOMAR opened its doors as Mitchell's Marine Canvas & Upholstery. At that time, Homer's population was about 2,000 people and Alaska had been a state for less than 20 years. Alaska -- all eight million square miles only had a population of 300,000. We were not really pioneers. Our reasons for making Alaska home were based more on personal freedoms and great fishing more than anything else.

A converted GMC school bus was our shop, a barrel stove for heat and a single commercial sewing machine for manufacturing was enough to open the doors. With a sprinkling of talent and a healthy dose of guts, we nurtured that first business until it grew to 16 diverse an talented employees, numerous sewing machines and 10,000 square feet of work space. We now have a beautiful retail store where visitors and locals alike love to browse, shop and design that custom item to perfectly fit their needs. We invite you to shop on-line or, if you are in Homer, stop in and visit our retail store located in one of the prettiest places on earth!

WE’RE HIRING AT NOMAR! 🧵

As summer winds down and cozy season settles into Homer, we’re looking for people to join our crew at NOMAR.

Our biggest need right now is production sewing. Experienced sewers are always our first choice, but experience isn’t necessarily required. If you’re local, reliable, eager to learn, and looking for steady work and a skill you can build on, we can train the right person.

We have full-time, year-round positions available, and part-time or seasonal work may also be considered.

NOMAR is a warm, bright, clean shop right here in Homer, Alaska, where we manufacture gear that gets shipped all over Alaska and around the world. Commercial fishing gear is still at the heart of what we do, but our shop produces a huge variety of sewn products.

What we offer:
• PTO
• 401(k)
• Wi-Fi
• Showers + laundry
• A warm, bright workspace
• A great crew
• Opportunities to learn and grow
• Steady, year-round work
• And paychecks that never bounce 😉

Have another skill to bring to the table? We love that too. Sewing machine repair, upholstery, embroidery, bookkeeping, design, photography, IT, carpentry, art, music, cooking, fixing things, leading things, following things… NOMAR has always been a place with a pretty interesting collection of humans and talents.

But right now, production sewing is number 1.

Prefer to put your headphones on, settle in and work without dealing with the public all day? You can do that here. Want to be the social ray of sunshine? That works too. Around here, you can pretty much adjust your own level of peopling. 😂

Come as you are. Come learn something new. Or bring the skills you already have and grow with us.

Stop by NOMAR in Homer, meet the crew, take a tour and see if there might be a place for you here.

📍 Homer, Alaska
🧵 Full-time year-round preferred
🪡 Experienced sewers encouraged to apply
🙌 Training available for the right person

Come sew with us.

“Can you make a bag for my growler?” 🍻

Why yes. Yes we can. 😂

Custom work is one of our favorite parts of what we do. Bring us the problem, the idea, or the I don’t think anyone makes this and let’s see what we can come up with.

Another salmon season in the books.

It looked different depending on where you fished this year.

Some fisheries were strong, some were tough, and some never did get the season they needed.

To everyone who spent another summer working Alaska’s waters, we’re proud to make gear for you.

Thank you for supporting local, Made in Alaska.

What an honor! 💙

NOMAR was recognized at the 2026 Industry Appreciation Day as the Outstanding Commercial Fishing Industry Support Business.

For decades, we’ve been making gear right here in Homer for Alaska’s commercial fishing community, listening to fishermen, solving problems, and building products made to work.

Being recognized by the industry we’ve been proud to support for all these years means a whole lot to us.

Thank you to the United Cook Inlet Drift Association and everyone who has supported NOMAR along the way!

Gear that’s good for whatever the season is 🎣 🪵

We love seeing how our gear helps Alaskans support their adventurous ways of living!

Our Brailer Bags were designed for salmon - and are often used for much more!

The seasons may shift - but our commitment to quality remains the same. 😉
