Eugenia axillaris White Stopper
The characteristic smell of the white stopper is caused by the evaporation of volatile chemicals from the leaves. Generally speaking, volatile, or essential, oils evaporate at normal temperatures. They are called essential because they contain the essence of the plant’s fragrance; it does not mean “essential” for metabolic activity (such as amino acids). But, the flowers and fruits are essential for insects and birds.
Some people say that this is the most desirable of all of the stoppers, a sentimental favorite with a distinctive odor, woodsy, earthy, the natural smell of the hardwood hammock. Interestingly, the species “axillaris” comes from the name for the underarm area of the human body, which should not deter you from installing these on your project.
The exact substance that creates the aroma is guaiol, which, studies show, has anti-microbial properties and has long use in folk medicine for a variety of purposes: anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-anxiety, pain relief and cancer inhibition. The use of plant products has the potential to supplement, and may eventually replace, chemotherapy.
So, go on out there and take a whiff! It’s good for your health!

Flower Story
“Where shall I begin, to tell the story of how sweet a flower can be....?”
Flowering plants (angiosperms) have staminate (male) and pistillate (female) elements.
Mostly, the flowering parts are combined on the same plant, with variations of presentation. Some have the male and female parts on separate individuals. The male provides the pollen, which must somehow be delivered to the female to produce the fruit. There are different ways for the transfer to occur: wind, insects, birds, even humans can play a pollinatory role! Go on, get in there!

Coccoloba uvifera Seagrape Uva de playa

Two Taino men were walking along the beach when they saw bizarre figures fumbling around in the sea grape bushes that lined the shore.
“What are those creatures?” one asked.
“Couldn’t tell you, bro,” the other replied. “Wait, those are humans, I think! But, look how they are dressed!”
“How vulgar! Too much clothing, very impractical for this climate! How did they get here? Wow, is that a boat over there? It’s big!”
The foreign men were frantically stuffing the ripe fruits of the sea grape trees into their mouths. One called to the Taino. He said, “Hola, ¿estamos en la India?”
“What is he saying, bro?”
“I don’t know, but they are obviously hungry. They sure are devouring the sea grapes!”
“Well, it’s a few weeks after the autumn equinox and the grapes are deliciously ripe now. Let’s help them!”
The two Taino men assisted the poor beings in gathering the fruits.
“¡Gracias! ¡Amigos, nos han salvado la vida!”
“I guess they are thanking us.”
“Looks like it. Maybe they will go away now that they are full.”
“I sure hope so!” The two men continued their walk along the beach.

Pseudophoenix Palms

We grow two species of Pseudophoenix: P. sargentii and P. vinifera. At first glance, they look quite similar, like a pair of twins when you first meet them. After a while you can tell them apart at a glance.

Muhlenbergia capillaris Muhly Grass
The embers glowed red. The logs crackled and sizzled, sending out a pleasant, cleansing aroma. The storyteller spoke just loud enough for everyone to hear. Most of them were on the verge of sleep and had their eyes closed. But they listened carefully.
“At the beginning of time, Mother Earth noticed that she could use water to create a variety of interesting inventions, and so life began. The living things that she had created started to cover the Earth.
“She noticed that the water was trying to escape into the sky. If all of the water left, the living things would dry out. So, she put clouds in the sky to catch the water and send it back down. After that, clouds became kind of like her pet, a special interest she had. As a whimsical touch, she decided to make pink clouds on the Earth, to share with the people who could not fly up to touch an actual cloud. And that is where the mulhy grass came from.”

Eugenia rhombea Red Stopper
Highly ornamental shrubby tree! Suitable for any landscaping use: carefully trimmed vegetational barrier; understory screening element; courtyard specimen.
According to the Champion Tree National Register – as reported to American Forests, the National Champion Eugenia rhombea is in Monroe County. It is only 26 feet tall, with a crown spread of 9’. That is the biggest one in the United States!
This is firm evidence that the red stopper will never outgrow the confines of the space that you provide for it. With minimal pruning, you can keep it at 6’ or so........
