Join us this Friday (12/2) for the opening of Play and Danger, an exhibition by Caz Hardt.

Inspired by the chaos and artistic aggression of Dadaism, Hardt leaves the completion of his work completely out of his control. From a process of cutting out existing words and rearranging them at random, Hardt works painfully close to creating an infinite amount of poems. He shares his process in hopes that viewers will be able to independently construct what they see and be co-creators of what they view. Quoting philosopher Wittgenstein, “May others come and do it better.”

Play and Danger will be on display till January 29th. We hope to see you there.

For this weeks Peeps+Picks, we are featuring our current exhibiting artist Noa Emberson, an artist and designer born on O’ahu and raised across the Hawaiian Islands. His work is an intersection of grunge surf culture, Bauhaus design, and playful shapes.

Due to the “razor sharp” curation, some of Noa’s favorite books over the last few years have been found at Bās Bookshop and recommends The Art of Sound. Catching his eye not only because of his interest in all things album designs, but also because of its binding as it’s similar to what he hopes to use in a brochure design he is currently working on.

A shop like Bās is something Noa searches for when visiting other cities so to have one in his hometown has been an amazing source for inspiration. “Bās helps to reinforce the idea that Honolulu isn’t just about tourism, and that it has a thriving creative community as well.”

Make sure to come by and check out Noa’s exhibit currently on display till 11/20.

In Branding, Johnson strips everyday brands down to their basic components and shows how the birth of a brand begins not with finding a solution, but rather with identifying the missing gap in the market . Johnson proceeds to unveil hidden elements involved in creating a successful brand from the strapline that gives the brand a narrative and a purpose to clever uses of typography that unite design and language.

Shingo, hip hop musician/fashion designer for his brand .wear , recommends the book On Kurosawa: A Tribute to the Master Director by Peter Tasker.

When starting his music journey, Shingo watched as many Kurosawa films as he could find. With the combination of storytelling and dynamic acting by actors like Toshiro Mifune, what you witness on screen is true classic cinema.

The publications Bās Bookshop carries have been inspiring to individuals with its “above and beyond expectations”, Shingo states. “Much like movies and music albums, a well thought out theme is very inspirational regardless of your interest level to the topic.”
