Hauʻoli Lā Hānau e Queen Liliʻuokalani. 💜

Born on September 2, 1838, Liliʻuokalani dedicated her life to her lāhui and to the future of Hawaiʻi. As the last reigning monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom, her leadership, resilience, and steadfast commitment to her people continue to be remembered generations later.

Her devotion to Hawaiian identity, keiki, and culture endure through the legacy she left behind. It reminds us of the kuleana we carry to mālama our people and pass forward the knowledge and stories of those who came before us.

Today, we remember and honor her life, her strength, and her service to her lāhui.

Before Nā Mea Hawaiʻi, there was Native Books & Beautiful Things.

In the 1990s, a group of Hawaiʻi artists, makers, and creatives gathered around a table at a Chinese restaurant with a simple idea: create a space where their work, stories, and culture could be seen, shared, and supported.

That gathering became the beginning of something much bigger.

Written by Paige Brattin, this bilingual Hawaiian and English keepsake was created for families to capture the milestones, memories, and first experiences of their pēpē. Throughout its 64 pages are spaces for photos and notes, paired with reflections on growing up in Hawaiʻi and the special relationships between ʻohana, keiki, and ʻāina.

Mahalo nui to everyone who came out and supported Nā Mea Hawaiʻi at the Made in Hawaiʻi Festival.

Our first year was an incredible success, and we’re so grateful to everyone who stopped by, shopped with us, and got to experience what made in Hawai’i truly is. It was especially meaningful to represent and uplift many of our makers who weren’t able to attend this year, giving their work, stories, and creativity a place to be seen and celebrated.

Mahalo to our community, our makers, and everyone who continues to support Hawaiʻi’s artists, small businesses, and cultural creatives.

We couldn’t have asked for a better first year. Mahalo nui loa!
