“I will follow you, Lord, but first…” — Luke 9:61
Those two little words in today’s Gospel deserve our attention:
“But first…”
How often do we say that to God without even realizing it?
I’ll pray… but first, let me finish this.
I’ll go to Mass… unless something else comes up.
I’ll make time for God… when life settles down.
I’ll follow You, Lord… but first.
And Jesus’ answer today is challenging because He reminds us that faith was never meant to fit into whatever space is left over.
God doesn’t ask to be one of our priorities. He asks to be first.
Before our schedules.
Before our distractions.
Before our plans.
Even before the people we love most.
Not because those things don’t matter…but because when God is first, everything else has a better chance of finding its proper place.
And putting God first doesn’t mean life will suddenly become easy or that nothing painful will happen. It means that when life isn’t easy, we know Who we are following.
Maybe today is a good day to ask ourselves:
What have I been putting before God?
And maybe it’s time to stop saying, “But first…”
🙏 God first. Everything else follows.
Have a blessed day.
