This Labor Day, we’re looking back at the people who were once hard at work right here at the Hopewell Tomato Factory.

Long before this building became Tomato Factory Antiques, it was a bustling tomato cannery, operating from 1892 to around 1950. During tomato season, the factory ran at an incredible pace—packing as many as 10,000 quart cans a day, requiring approximately 50,000 locally grown tomatoes every single day.

Keeping everything moving took a workforce of 50 to 75 employees, the majority of them women and girls. They peeled tomatoes by hand, packed the cans and helped keep this Hopewell operation running at full speed during the short six-week canning season.

The wonderful old photograph of the women gathered on the loading platform, surrounded by tomato crates, gives us a glimpse of the people behind that history—and seems especially fitting to share on Labor Day.

Today, when you walk through the Tomato Factory, you’re walking through a building where generations of local people once worked, laughed and made their living. We’re proud to be part of preserving the story of this special Hopewell landmark.

Happy Labor Day from the Tomato Factory Antiques Center — and a tip of the hat to all the workers who came before us. And this includes the founders of the current Tomato Factory in 1964, Mary Ann & Maurice Browning.

IT’S FABULOUS & VINTAGE!!

Make this weekend your next great adventure at Tomato Factory Antiques in Hopewell, NJ.

We’re shining the spotlight on Fabulous & Vintage, where dealer Caroline puts together the kind of space you don’t just walk through, you get lost in.

Right now she’s got a full white wicker set that would make any porch or sunroom the favorite room in your house. Antique cabinets and chests with all the character and hardware you can’t find in anything made today. A collection of lamps that ranges from porcelain to cranberry glass to brass. Vintage rocking horse. Old signage. Glassware. And one of those armoires that makes you rethink your entire living room the second you see it.

There’s a big rooster perched on top of stacked vintage metal crates, a drop-front desk with a tiger standing guard, an old carnival wheel, leather suitcases, cutting boards in a wrought iron stand, and a rack loaded with vintage quilts, pottery, and crystal. Gold-framed mirrors. Birdhouses. A dress form. It just keeps going.

Caroline specializes in antique furniture, vintage and handmade jewelry, lighting, and truly unique accessories!

She is one of more than 20 dealers here at the Tomato Factory, and every one of them brings something different to the building. Come spend a Saturday or Sunday with us and see what catches your eye.
