Our raffle is complete. Rapid Ministries US Disaster Relief, headquartered in Douglass, KS (currently serving in TN), was our winner. A check for $2,710 was presented to City Council Member Brittanie Bogard to deliver to the gentleman who was injured by a tree that fell through his home in Hopkinsville earlier this year. As many in our community know the thunderstorm from a few weeks ago was devastating to some members of our community. One family was unfortunate enough to have a tree land on their home and cause injuries. Our friends at Southern Tree and Debris along with Skylar Henderson of Beaver Tree Service volunteered their time to remove the tree from the home but the work is not done. Mr. Jesse Haskins is still currently in Vanderbilt receiving treatment and there is much work to do to put this family back in their home. So here is a great way to help. Come down and see us, buy a $10 ticket and get the chance to win almost $1,000 worth of gear while helping a family in need. Winner will be announced in the store and via Facebook on May 22nd. You do not need to be present to win. All proceeds from the raffle will be presented to Mr. Haskins family.

Rev. Trae Fistler is the Pastor of Faith Lutheran Church Hopkinsville, KY. In August 2024 he began serving as the District Disaster Response Coordinator (DDRC) and Chainsaw Instructor for LERT (Lutheran Early Response Team) volunteers of the Mid-South District of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. He is trained to teach basic chainsaw, intermediate chainsaw, and advanced chainsaw trainings for LERT. He regularly instructs volunteers on chainsaw safety, maintenance, use, limbing and bucking storm damaged trees, tension and compression, ropes and knots for tree work, and how to safely fell trees. All information is taught from best practices from the arborist industry, including but not limited to Forest Applications Training, TCIA, OSHA, and ANSI Z133.

Date of instruction to be determined based on winners availability. Class can be tailored to the winners request. You may invite others to attend with you but space will be limited. Since this is volunteer instruction, class attendees will be required to sign a release of liability waiver prior to the course. All necessary tools and PPE for the course will be supplied by the instructor."

NATIONAL ARBOR DAY HISTORY

On April 10, 1872, journalist and newspaper editor J.Sterling Morton established Arbor Day in the state of Nebraska with hopes that it would spread across the country. This first celebration challenged the people of Nebraska to plant as many trees as they possibly could. Since the pioneers missed the trees and forests of the east, they answer the challenge by planting more than 1 million trees that very first year.
