🔍 The Science & Story Behind the Water
BEFORE (The 18” Drop): Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) operations drew down Lake LBJ by 18 inches, bringing the lake to the lower end of its target operating range (824.4–825.0 ft MSL) to create extra channel capacity for incoming weather.

AFTER (The Muddy Surge): Torrential rainfall upstream sent severe floodwaters rushing down both the Llano River (which surged over 20 feet high with flow rates topping 79,000 cfs) and the Colorado River directly into Lake LBJ.

💡 Why Lake LBJ Turned Muddy So Quickly
Lake LBJ is a pass-through lake—meaning it has no flood storage pool. When high-volume runoff enters from the Llano and Colorado rivers, LCRA opens the floodgates at Wirtz Dam to route water downstream toward Lake Marble Falls and Lake Travis. That massive surge carries heavy mud, clay, and sediment, transforming clear blue waters into a churning muddy brown in a matter of hours.

🚤 Boater Safety Checklist After a Flood
While Lake LBJ handled the passing floodwaters as designed, high river inflows bring underwater hazard changes:

🪵 Watch for Debris: Floating logs, branches, and submerged obstacles often drift down from the Llano River confluence.

The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) is actively operating multiple floodgates to pass major storm runoff through the Highland Lakes.

Gate Status: Multiple floodgates OPEN at Wirtz Dam.
Lake LBJ Level: Holding steady at 823.5 feet msl (about 98% full).

If you’ve been tracking the local water stats, here is your official Lake LBJ condition update:

Water Levels: Holding perfectly steady right around 824 feet msl (about 95% full).

Dam Status: Wirtz Dam is currently operating in hydroelectric generation mode, putting in work to provide power while keeping the lake level right in its normal, stable operating range.
