Well that’s all folks! The killing frost has come.

It has been a great season (albeit dry). On to shutting it all down and getting the dahlias into the root cellar. Already looking forward to next season. Thanks to everyone!

The late spring freeze may have taken out the apples and peaches, but we got pears!

A little good news on the spongy moth front. The naturalized maimaiga fungus has decimated the population so far this year. While they are still around, their numbers are a fraction of what they were even three weeks ago. In the photos, a European beech that was infested is now nearly free of them. Shown are two dead caterpillars still hanging on a leaf and the damage they were causing before the population crash.

Not all areas are experiencing the same decline… and they are still present, but there is reason to be optimistic that this year will not be nearly as bad as last.
