Please join us on Saturday, April 4 at 6:30pm to celebrate the release of ๐˜ˆ ๐˜‰๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ง๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ ๐˜œ๐˜ฌ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ, a poetry collection by Elina Petrova, published by Mutabilis Press.

Elina Petrovaโ€™s ๐˜ˆ ๐˜‰๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ง๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ ๐˜œ๐˜ฌ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ is the winning, inaugural issue of the Mutable Lines Chapbook Series Contest. Petrovaโ€™s voice has an immediacy of time and place that makes her work memorable. Poems featuring native birds create the space necessary for difficult memories to filter through, but do not shy away from vignettes of joy and gratitude. From the grittiness of life in a mining town, โ€œCall this good times if you never smelled methane,โ€ to the unimaginable horrors of war in her native Ukraine, she watches from her home in Houston where โ€œa neighborโ€™s star jasmine and the bassline/ of a quinceaรฑera wafts into our quiet blue room.โ€ Petrovaโ€™s poems, alive with wit, intelligence, and empathy, are crafted in lines that sing of longing.

Elina Petrova lived in Ukraine until 2007, where she worked in heating engineering management. In 1998, in her hometown of Donetsk, she published her debut book, ๐˜ž๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฆ ๐˜š๐˜ฒ๐˜ถ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ, in Russian and received the First Prize of the International Poetry Contest at the Text Festival. Shortly after immigrating to the United States and starting a new career as a paralegal, Elina began writing poetry in English, a language she taught herself. Her U.S. publications include ๐˜ˆ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜”๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ, 2015, and ๐˜‹๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ต ๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, 2019. Weโ€™re excited to host illustrator Misako Rocks, author of ๐˜๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜‹๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ธ ๐˜’๐˜ข๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ช ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ข books, for a drawing workshop and book signing on Sunday, March 29 at 12:30pm. All are welcome, especially kids ages 6-15ish!

Meet Misako Rocks!, a Japanese manga artist and illustrator who followed her dreams all the way to America. At age 19, she won a scholarship to come to America as an exchange student and has been making her mark ever since. Misakoโ€™s love of manga and anime led her to become a manga artist in the US, with her graphic novel ๐˜‰๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ ๐˜‰๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ being selected as one of the 2021 Best Graphic Novels for Children by the American Library Association. Misako has also written several books and has been featured in documentaries, TV, and radio shows, and even collaborated with Playstation. With her online community and book series Learn Manga with Misako, and her YouTube channel , she is helping kids learn kawaii manga drawing. ๐—๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—”๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด, born in New York City, currently lives and works in Providence, RI. While at Yale in the 60s, Allingย studied among a legendary generation of artists, including Chuck Close, Jennifer Bartlett, Richard Serra, Nancy Graves, Janet Fish, Rackstraw Downs, and Brice Marden. They turned contemporary art making into a revolution of material, scale, subject, and perception. In that vein, Alling focused her gaze on capturing and magnifying the natural world to redefine a category of painting long regarded as decorative and conventional. In a New York Times review of the artistsโ€™ first New York City exhibition, critic Peter Schjeldahl placed her among a group of artists who were โ€œadvancing realist painting in an important way. Almost brutal in its scale manipulations and its assertions of detail, but full of acridity and sweetness of personality, work like Allingโ€™s reintroduces us to the visible world with a bang.โ€

She also attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and was a Core Fellow at the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Additionally, she is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship.
