The plant the flies go crazy for!🪰

Definitely one of our favorite more unusual plant we carry is Stapelia gigantea! This clump forming succulent produces these massive striking flowers that are honestly out of this world! The blooms are fragrant (stinky) but that’s part of their unusual appeal!

Stay weird!🪰✨

If you love native plants like we do it’s important to also know their traditional uses and importance to indigenous peoples’. With yesterday being Indigenous Peoples’ day I took some time to research the ethnobotanical uses of some Texas native plants by tribes throughout the Americas.

Many of these plants are not only important to our ecosystem and wildlife but played a vital role culturally for many of these people, some ceremonially, medicinally, and in their diet.

Native plants have been used for thousands of years by indigenous peoples’ creating a reciprocal relationship. It’s important to source responsibly.

It’s time to start your onion, garlic, and shallots! Each bulb will grow into an entire plant. Bulbs prefer fertile soil that is loose and well-drained. Both can be planted in the fall for summer harvest. Place each bulb root-side down in a hole. Plant in fall to harvest and enjoy in spring! 🧅🧄

Did you know that Houston lies along the 95th meridian, which is the center of the main migration route of trans-Gulf migrant birds. Birds from all over North America pass through!

The place that always transports people in the nursery is definitely our greenhouse. It’s a magical place filled with beautiful tropical plants, occasional colorful annuals, and desert beauties.

So if you need a little break and want to be surrounded by greenery the greenhouse is the place to be!💚
