How do you get guests to leave your party?

There’s several things you need to do. One, as you have heard me say many times, manage expectations.

How do you manage expectations on the front end? With your invitation, you say, “This party is from 7:00 to 10:00 PM.” You always put an end time. Most people will honor that.

Second way, towards the end of an evening when it’s really time to wrap up, you start talking in past tense. “James, it was so nice to see you. I’m so glad you could come to my party.”

Third way that almost always works is you shut the bar down. If there’s no more liquor or wine flowing, most people will take that as a sign it’s time to leave.

And if none of that works, and I have done this, I will go back to the bedroom, I slip my heels off, and I come out in my house shoes.

What is the ideal size for a dinner party?

It depends on your home. It depends on your table. It depends on how many people you’re comfortable cooking for.

So there’s a lot of variations, but I will tell you what I do.

It is really based on my table size. In our dining room, I can host twelve people at that table, so that is my ideal dinner party.

But let me tell you what I do. Our table is a rectangle. The best table for conversation is a circular table, but how do you do that if you can’t fit a circular table into your room?

I actually had a special dining top made that I had put on the legs of the table I already had, and I made it wide enough that I could seat two people at one end and two at the other.

So this would be, if you had twelve, that’s eight, so four on either side, two on each end.

What it does, it’s like I created two separate circular tables all in my rectangle table.

So these four down here easily can converse. These four down here can easily converse. The two left over in the middle can kind of go both ways, and you really create a dynamic conversation when you have that type of table.

So I highly recommend don’t be limited with what you have. Doctor it up. Figure out what works for you. But I personally love a dinner party of twelve.

Always remember that the table is the anchor of your home.

And if you’re having a dinner party, it’s always nice to decorate your table but keep in mind this can be very simple and it’s actually how I recommend decorating your table.

A centerpiece with some flowers, a few scattered candles, that is really all you need.

What if hospitality isn't about having the perfect home... but opening the one you already have?🍴

One of my favorite memories is of my grandparents inviting another couple to dinner—even though they only had enough utensils for three people. My grandmother and grandfather quietly shared one knife beneath the table so their guests would never know.

That simple act has stayed with me all these years because it reminds me that hospitality isn't about having more. It's about welcoming others with what you already have.

What's one small way you'll practice hospitality this week?

What do you do when you do not know which fork to use at a dinner party?

That’s very easy. Always remember, there are a few exceptions, just work from the outside in.

It’s always the fork on the very left on the outside that you begin with, and if you’re truly confused about what to do, just sit and watch the hostess and wait for her to pick up her fork.
