This was pretty cool for our little Texas company.
Shooting Industry recently included Victory VCI® and our Dealer Program in its Dealer Advantage Industry News.

What does VCI actually mean?

We put it right in our name Victory VCI, but a lot of gun owners have never had a reason to know what those three letters stand for.
VCI means V***r Corrosion Inhibitor.

Here’s the simple version:
When metal is enclosed with VCI material, corrosion inhibiting v***r moves through the enclosed space and helps protect exposed metal surfaces from rust and corrosion.

Because that protective v***r moves throughout the enclosed space, it can help reach exposed metal surfaces that may be difficult to cover completely with oil or a cloth.

That’s why VCI technology is used to protect metal during storage and why we use it for fi****ms, ammunition, magazines and other stored metal gear.

So, if you’ve ever seen “VCI” on a storage product and wondered what it actually does, we put together a plain-English explanation of how it works.

What actually prevents a gun from rusting in storage?
A hard case? Gun oil? Silica gel? A safe dehumidifier? VCI?
The answer is that they don't all do the same job.

A gun safe primarily provides security.
A hard case provides physical protection.
Silica gel helps manage moisture.
A dehumidifier helps control the larger storage environment.
Gun oil and preservatives protect surfaces where they're applied.
VCI creates a corrosion-inhibiting environment around enclosed metal.

I work for a company that makes corrosion prevention products, which makes this a little embarrassing.

I bought this Springfield Model 87A, aka the “Gill Gun,” in great shape with the foam-lined case. I got busy, and what was supposed to be temporary storage turned into about two years.

I opened it recently because I wanted to go shooting and found this.

Apparently “I’ll take care of it later” can turn into two years pretty fast.

Has anyone else had temporary storage turn into something like this, or am I the only one?

Your gun safe is storage. It isn’t automatically rust protection.
Most gun owners use some combination of dehumidifiers, silica gel, oil or wax and all of them can help.
But they don’t all protect the same way.
Dehumidifier rods help manage the environment inside the safe by slightly warming the air and reducing condensation.
Silica gel absorbs moisture, but it has a limited capacity and needs to be recharged or replaced once saturated.
Oil and wax protect the metal surfaces they actually cover. Effective, but they depend on application and maintenance.
VCI works differently.

Hunting season gets busy. Rust doesn’t wait.
A rifle or shotgun can come home from a wet or humid hunt looking perfectly fine then develop surface rust while it sits waiting for the next trip.
The part that gets overlooked is often what happens between hunts.
Clean off moisture and residue.
Make sure the firearm is completely dry.
Store it somewhere cool and dry.
Add VCI protection while it sits.
