There are simply not enough books about Houston history written by Black authors. Period.

So when we learned about Carlton Houston () and his new book, The Houston Negro Hospital, we were beyond excited to support it in every way we could. Not only does this book explore Houston history, it tells the story of a landmark right here in Third Ward, just blocks away from our store.

Head to ’s page to learn more about his journey and this important work. It will be on sale on May 26, 2026. Please support Kindred Stories when purchasing this book!

About the Book:

Set against the racial tensions of early twentieth-century Houston, The Houston Negro Hospital tells the story of an unlikely alliance between pioneering Black surgeon Dr. William M. Drake and white oil magnate Joseph Cullinan to save a hospital born from America’s Black hospital movement. Dedicated on Juneteenth in 1926, the hospital became a powerful symbol of dignity, resilience, and health care access in the Jim Crow South.

Indie Bookstore Day was a beautiful sight ✨ More than 600 of you showed up to celebrate with us, and we hope it filled your Saturday with the same joy we’re still carrying 💛

Running a bookstore isn’t for the faint of heart, but the Kindred Stories team continues to stretch, learn, and show up with intention 📚 We work seven days a week to keep this space alive. We’re researching, ordering, receiving, engaging, beautifying, learning, listening, shipping, planning, advocating, growing, and, yes, dreaming 🌱

And even with all that, we wouldn’t be here without you 🤎

When we first opened, we never imagined it would grow into what it is today 🌻 We are deeply grateful for the readers who choose to shop with us, who truly see, support, and believe in what we’re building and sustaining 🙏🏾

Cheers to all of us 🥂 We’re going to keep this thing rolling until the wheels fall off 🚗💨

Three days. Three authors. One romantic weekend we’ll never forget. 📖💕 Thank you to the phenomenal Natasha Bishop, J.L. Seegars, and Danielle Allen for reminding us that Black love stories deserve to be told and celebrated. The stories, laughs, twerk music, and words of wisdom — we’re still not over it. Congratulations on your new releases!

And none of it would’ve been possible without our incredible moderators — Alexandra Warren, Zee Reneé, and Monica Walters. Y’all carried these conversations with so much care making these author talks a safe space to relax, connect, and let love lead. Thank you! 🤎

And to the folks who filled up them seats FOR THREE DAYS STRAIGHT??We love y’all so much.

The out-of-towners who traveled far just for this moment.
The die-hard fans that came every single day.
The first-time Kindred visitors.
The ones who had a money spread of books for our authors to sign.

Y’all went above and beyond! We can’t thank y’all enough for your support.

This is why we do this. See y’all next time. 🤎

Independent Bookstore Day is this weekend and we’re ready to turn up!

Indie bookstores are more than just a cute lil spot to buy books or attend an author talk. An indie bookstore is a safe haven for the community. This is where culture is preserved and curiosity is nurtured.

…so empty that shopping cart on *insert evil mass consumption conglomerate here* .com and support the indie bookstores that work hard 25/8 to uplift local authors, artists, and readers — and not just for a trend or a cash grab ☕️

We’ll be celebrating THIS Saturday, so come through and enjoy a sidewalk sale, free ARCs, and complimentary champagne (while supplies last).

P.S. The HTX indie bookstore crawl is in full effect! Hurry up, join the adventure, and get your bingo card stamped before the end of April.

We had the ultimate pleasure of giving s*x educator and author Ericka Hart () a warm H-town welcome in celebration of their debut release Nasty Work.

Ericka and southern writer Kiese Laymon had an honest conversation discussing consent, loving intellectuals, and the not-so pleasurable points of teaching s*x ed in a system built to muffle out the experiences of marginalized communities.

Ericka, you’ve educated so many of us throughout the years on the timeline. Your story and presence encourage us to not be afraid of the facts + remain inquisitive in all areas of our lives. We’re incredibly proud of you for taking the leap to let your knowledge take on a new form.

Keep sharing and being the trailblazing bada** you are! Come visit us during your next visit in Houston..and in the wise words of Kiese, we “love that you put nasty in the title of your book.”

P.S. Terri’s rum cake is Ericka Hart-approved 🙂‍↕️🍰
