The wireless mic keeps cutting out in the middle of the song. Every week, same call.

9 times out of 10 it's not the mic. It's one of these 4 things, and 3 you can fix in under a minute.

1. Two mic handhelds on the same channel. Two systems in the same room fighting for one frequency. On an ImPro UHF-89 you have 20 channels between 560 and 570 MHz. Move one to channel 12, done.
2. Line of sight blocked by the TV cabinet. A wooden door between mic and receiver eats UHF fast. Put the receiver on top, not behind.
3. Batteries at 30 percent. UHF handhelds go glitchy long before they die. Fresh AAs.
4. Wi-Fi router 3 feet away. 2.4GHz karaoke mics hate a busy router. Move it, or step up to real UHF.

'Which wireless mic should I actually buy?' We get this call 4 times a day. Here's the honest map, by room size and budget.

1. Small room, family of 4, occasional Tet party. ImPro UHF-77Wifi. Enough range for a living room, two mics included.

2. Medium room, weekly singing, walls between singer and receiver. ImPro UHF-89 wireless Mics, $299. Metal Handheld - rock solid.

3. Big room or restaurant, mics used daily. Shure BLX288/SM58, $769. Selectable frequencies, clean, this is what pros actually use.

4. Vietnamese KTV lounge feel at home with echo built in. ImPro UHF-88ii pro set with on-mic mixer, echo, treble, bass.

The Blue Snowflake is what we put on the counter when a mom walks in and says 'my 8-year-old wants to sing karaoke on YouTube in her room, I don't need a whole system.'

It is not a Shure SM58. It will not fill a party. What it will do: give a kid a real condenser mic that sounds ten times better than the laptop mic, folds into a travel puck, and won't get lost in a cable pile. Wedding season is here. The single question we field every August: 'anh, what mic setup do I actually need for a 200-guest Vietnamese wedding, upstairs ballroom, the DJ says his system is not enough?'

Honest rider from the last 6 weddings we serviced in Houston and Katy:

2x Shure BLX24/SM58 wireless ($389 each). Two mics because the MC and the singer are never the same person, and duets happen. BLX not GLXD because a hotel ballroom has 40 phones on 2.4 GHz, and BLX runs UHF.

1x ImPro UHF-88MXR as backup pair. If a Shure receiver drops, you have 60 seconds before the room notices.

One mixing amp with real echo (not the DJ's board reverb). Vietnamese guests will ask for echo on Bolero. Say yes.

One pair of QSC K12.2 or bigger. Bookshelf speakers do not survive 'Diễm Xưa' at 11pm.

The $54 mic: Shure PGA48-QTR, wired, cardioid. Honest home karaoke mic.
The $189 mic: Shure Beta 58A, wired, supercardioid. Tighter pickup, less feedback, more presence in the mids where vocals live.

Here's the honest take: if your neighbor sings once a month at birthdays, the PGA48 is plenty. If you sing every Sunday and want your voice to sit on top of the music like at a KTV lounge, the Beta 58A earns its price the first weekend.

Real story from the shop this week. A KJ in Pasadena called at 4:12pm on a Friday. Wedding at 6pm. His Beta 58A capsule got dropped on concrete the night before, wind screen dented in, still worked but sounded like a tin can.

We had one on the shelf. He drove in, we swapped the capsule at the counter in 11 minutes, tested it through a CS-500 pair in the back room, sent him out the door at 5:04. He texted at midnight: 'first dance was perfect, thank you anh.'

The Shure Beta 58A is $189. The capsule is user-replaceable, which is why KJs buy them here instead of a marketplace. And if you ever need one on a Friday afternoon, call 281-988-7988 before you panic.
