⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Hollow Bones was actually my first Jodi Picoult, and apparently I've been missing out. 😂

Molly Fitzgerald was only two months old when her mother went to an appointment at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, and never came home.

Now she's an adult running Rhode Island's emergency preparedness program—basically, she's made an entire career out of anticipating the worst things that could possibly happen and figuring out how to keep people safe when they do.

And Molly is a smartie pants. 😂 You know I love a smart female main character, so she had me pretty quickly.

She's married to Jesse, a police polygraph expert who longtime Jodi Picoult readers might recognize from My Sister's Keeper.

What I loved was how many times this book surprised me. Just when I thought I understood where the story was headed, something shifted and made me rethink what I thought I knew. There were several twists I genuinely didn't see coming, which made this one really hard to put down.

I went into Hollow Bones without really knowing what to expect—from the book or from Jodi Picoult—and came out of it wondering why it took me this long to finally read one of her books.

So longtime Jodi Picoult readers: what should I read next? Because obviously I have some catching up to do. 😂

And if you've never read her either, Hollow Bones turned out to be a pretty great place for me to start.

Well, obviously. 🧙‍♀️😂

The Witch is the brand-new thriller from Freida McFadden, and it came out this week.

This one moves between the present day and Salem in 1692, with witchcraft, secrets, murder and—because it's Freida McFadden—I'm assuming absolutely no one should be trusted.

I haven't read this one yet, so I can't give you my final verdict. But I know how many Freida McFadden readers we have around here, and combining one of your favorite thriller authors with witches in October feels like a pretty easy decision. And just look at those sprayed edges!! 😍

Freida readers: how many words do I actually need to say after “new Freida McFadden”? 😂

I've got copies at the bookstore, and spooky season is very much taking over around here. 🖤📚

Hi friends,

It’s Banned Books Week, and as a bookseller, I feel a responsibility to speak up. I believe you should be able to choose what you read, and I’m firmly opposed to taking that choice away from others. Protecting free speech means making room for stories and ideas—even when we disagree with them.

You don’t have to like every book in the bookstore. Neither do I. We don’t have to agree with every author or want our children to read every book. We each get to make those choices for ourselves and our children, and we owe other families that same freedom.

Books help us understand each other. They give us a chance to see beyond our own experiences, ask questions, and sometimes change our minds. Removing them from school and public libraries takes that opportunity away from people who depend on those shelves.

I’m concerned about the Trump administration’s attempts to dismantle the federal agency that supports our libraries and its efforts to dictate which ideas belong in the Smithsonian. I don’t want our government deciding that only certain versions of our history or certain people’s stories deserve to be heard.

Our current representative, Derek Schmidt, voted for legislation cutting public-broadcasting funding, including support for PBS, NPR, and local stations. That wasn’t a book-ban vote, but access to news and educational programming matters, too. These are decisions I’m paying attention to as we approach November’s midterm elections.

Free speech has to protect more than the ideas we’re comfortable with—or the ones our elected officials approve of. Otherwise, what exactly are we protecting?

This Thursday, October 8, we’re hosting a meet-and-greet at the bookstore with Don Coover, who is challenging Schmidt for the U.S. House seat in Kansas’s 2nd Congressional District. I want to know where he stands on censorship, support for our libraries, and protecting our freedom to read. I hope you’ll join us and come with your own questions, too. People asking for our votes should be willing to answer them.

Having a bookstore means something to me. I want this little place to make room for different stories, different experiences, and conversations that matter. And I’m willing to speak up to protect that.

A little early Christmas shopping announcement from me: our Humboldt FCCLA holiday fundraiser begins today! 📚

We’re doing it entirely online this year. From now through November 6, anything you order at bridgestreetbooks.net will count toward the fundraiser. We made holiday gift lists for anyone who wants a place to start, but you’re free to order whatever you’d like from the website.

The one thing to remember: put your FCCLA student’s name in the notes at checkout. You can have your order sent to the store for free student delivery, or shipped to your home at the usual cost. We’ll give store orders to students on November 23, and they’ll deliver them after that.

I’m excited to see what everyone picks out this year. ❤️
