This week, we were honored to celebrate and recognize the 17 interns who joined us at our Huntersville location before the back-to-school season begins.

Getting to know our interns, both domestic and international, is one of the most rewarding parts of the internship experience. Each person brings their own unique background, culture, perspective, and talents to Metrolina, helping make our team stronger and enriching our workplace in countless ways.

One of the highlights of the celebration was hearing the interns share their stories and experiences. We loved hearing how close many of our international students became while living together throughout the season. It was a great reminder that while people may come from different countries and speak different languages, a passion for horticulture speaks for itself.

We also appreciated the opportunity for our interns to hear from Metrolina leadership including CEO Abe VanWingerden and COO Art VanWingerden. Their insights, experiences, and words of wisdom provided valuable perspective, and we are fortunate that they took the time to invest in and encourage the next generation of horticulture professionals.

We are grateful that all 17 interns took the leap to join us, whether for the summer or for a full year. Watching them learn, contribute, and grow has been inspiring, and we are proud to have been part of their journey.

As this chapter comes to a close for some of our interns, we can't wait to see where their paths lead next. Thank you for your hard work, enthusiasm, and the impact you've made during your time with us. Whether you transition to a full-time role at Metrolina or pursue your career in the green industry or other fields, we wish you all the best!

The doctor is in! Another successful Annual Wellness Fair has been completed in Huntersville, with another one scheduled in the coming weeks for York. The goal of our Wellness Fairs is to support all of our employees on a whole-person wellness path. These events provide the opportunity for our team members to meet with our benefits partners, local wellness providers and our Human Resources team to learn more about the benefits we offer. As a result, we hope our team members ultimately feel empowered to prioritize their health! Thank you to the Metrolina Greenhouses Wellness Committee for continuing to foster a culture where wellness remains an important part of the employee experience.

The Metrolina Expo was one of our best ever this week. We love getting to showcase all of our amazing teams, and the expo - an internal event that’s like a mini trade show for Metrolina employees- is an amazing way to get us all interacting with each other! This year’s theme was "Growing better, every day." We absolutely love how creative everyone got with their booths! Whether it was creating a game, setting up a mini greenhouse, or other fun activities, we want to thank all of our participating teams and employees for their contributions and dedication to our community and our mission.

This week's participant is Huntersville's own Lead Mechanic, Joe Wood!

Joe was kind enough to give us a behind-the-scenes look at our mechanic shop to show just how important it is to keep Metrolina's fleet of more than 300 trailers running safely and efficiently as they move in and out of our facility every day.

Take a few minutes to hear what Joe's got to say and learn what has made his career at Metrolina so meaningful. His dedication helps keep our operation moving, and we're proud to have him on the team!

Curcuma, also known as Siam Tulip, is a tropical favorite prized for its elegant, tulip-like blooms and lush green foliage that bring a bold, exotic touch to gardens and containers. Blooming throughout the warm summer months, Curcuma adds long-lasting color to partially shaded outdoor spaces, while also making an excellent cut flower for fresh arrangements.

For the best performance, plant Curcuma in partial sun to bright filtered light and rich, well-draining soil. Keep the soil consistently moist during the active growing season, but avoid waterlogged conditions. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring and feed monthly during the growing season to encourage vigorous growth and abundant blooms.

Curcuma is perennial in USDA Zones 8-11 and can be grown as a summer annual or overwintered indoors in cooler climates. Once blooming has finished, allow the foliage to naturally die back as the plant enters dormancy. With minimal maintenance and proper winter care, Curcuma will return each year with vibrant blooms and lush tropical foliage.

The peak of the summer is a perfect time to plant heat-loving, low-maintenance perennials like Rudbeckia, Echinacea, Salvia, Sedum, Coreopsis, and Gaillardia. These beauties thrive throughout the summer and into the fall season, standing up to high sun and dry conditions, holding their color and providing food and habitat for our pollinator friends.

Check out some of these stunning bay shots that capture the beauty of perennials planted en masse in the landscape, and find these perennials and more in your favorite garden center!

Every great career starts with a first opportunity.

This National Intern Day, we're proud to celebrate the talented interns who are learning, growing, and helping shape the future of horticulture. From Marketing to Horticulture to Operations, our interns gain hands-on experience while exploring meaningful career paths and making a real impact across Metrolina.

This group includes a sample of this year's 20-member intern class, along with their managers. We're excited to celebrate the full group with an intern appreciation luncheon next week.

Our 2026 interns represent an incredible mix of backgrounds, perspectives, and cultures, including 12 interns close to home and eight international interns. Through our partnerships with the Communication for Agricultural Education Program (CAEP) and The Ohio State University's International Agriculture Program, as well as universities across the country, we're proud to host students from North Carolina State University, The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and The University of Tennessee, alongside international students representing Brazil, Colombia, Morocco, South Africa, Indonesia, and Panama.

While our domestic interns typically spend three months with us during the summer, our international interns join us for a full year, allowing them to gain extensive, hands-on experience across our greenhouses and operations. No matter the length of their internship, each student brings fresh ideas, unique experiences, and a passion for learning that helps our team continue growing better, every day.

We'd like to extend a very special thank you to all of the managers and mentors who have invested their time, knowledge, and encouragement into helping our interns grow. Your guidance, support, and dedication create opportunities that leave a lasting impact and help shape the next generation of horticulture professionals.

To all of our interns: thank you for being part of the Metrolina team! We are so proud of everything you've accomplished, and we can't wait to see where your journey takes you next.

We may have slightly exaggerated about how peaceful the greenhouse is. Sure, you'll get the sprinklers, but you'll also get the golf cart beeps, pots clacking, and the constant buzz of people hard at work.

Turn the volume up and experience the real sounds that keep millions of plants growing.

Sales Director Derek Clark at Metrolina Springfield reflects the campaign through his efforts to focus on the little things and the impact mentors have made on his career. Thank you for all your dedication, Derek, and for sharing the inspiration you have found and lessons learned from working in the horticulture industry.
