NEW YORK, N.Y.—Amazon Web Services (AWS) bestowed its 2026 Children’s Health Innovation Award on the global eyecare nonprofit Orbis International, supporting Orbis’ initiative to screen premature neonates in India and Vietnam for retinopathy of prematurity. Orbis will receive AWS Imagine Grant funding, as well as AWS computing credits and project implementation technical support, according to an announcement from the nonprofit. Orbis was named a recipient in the Children's Health Innovation Award category, which recognizes highly innovative, mission-critical projects accelerating children's health innovation using advanced cloud services.

ST. LOUIS—The World Council of Optometry (WCO) and Alcon have announced that both the WCO Alcon Dry Eye Wheel and the Dry Eye Management Map, free digital learning tools for eyecare professionals as part of the organizations’ dry eye initiative, are now available in 10 languages: English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Hungarian, Dutch, Bahasa, Ukrainian and Czech. First launched in 2023, the WCO Alcon Dry Eye Wheel has been updated in the past to include Spanish translation as well as current recommendations. The WCO Alcon Dry Eye Management map was introduced earlier this year.

BOCA RATON, Fla.—DryEye Rescue, a licensed supplier of over-the-counter and prescription pharmaceuticals to doctors and practices, has announced that it is now the exclusive distributor of ScoutPro in the U.S., with Bausch + Lomb continuing direct sales. ScoutPro, osmolarity test cards and control solutions are available now through DryEye Rescue and ready to ship. DryEye Rescue said the partnership builds on years of collaboration between the company and Bausch + Lomb across over-the-counter products for practices and, more recently, Bausch + Lomb’s prescription line through DryEye Rescue’s Rx division. With ScoutPro, DryEye Rescue now adds diagnostics to that relationship, the company added.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—Hot flashes and poor sleep are well known symptoms of menopause, but fewer than half of women recently surveyed by Johnson & Johnson realize that eye health changes can be part of that midlife transition as well, according to an announcement from the company. For example, only 40 percent of 6,000 women surveyed across six countries said they make a connection between menopause and emergence of symptoms like dry eyes, gritty eyes or blurry vision. During October’s Menopause Awareness Month, Johnson & Johnson is collaborating with the American Optometric Association and Naomi Watts, Academy Award–nominated actress, to promote greater awareness of these changes and encourage regular eyecare examinations for women going through menopause, the announcement noted.

ALEXANDRIA, Va.—New research from The Vision Council finds most U.S. adults experience dry eye, digital eye strain and other symptoms of eye strain, but at the same time many do not seek help from eyecare professionals. The Focused inSights 2026: Dry Eye and Digital Eye Strain report revealed 39 percent of symptomatic people said they have never raised their symptoms with a healthcare professional. The remaining 61 percent sought care from a healthcare provider, which can include an optometrist, ophthalmologist, primary care physician, pharmacist or nurse practitioner.

NEWARK, N.J.—Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists have transformed treatment of diabetes and obesity, with positive effects reported on cardiovascular events, blood pressure, cholesterol levels and more. Within the past two years, some concerns have arisen about a possible increased risk for non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, or NAION, among patients taking these medications. Now a spate of lawsuits is also alleging there could be a link. The leading cause of acute optic nerve injury in people older than 50 years, NAION most often presents as an acute, monocular, painless loss of vision, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

MACAU, China—Global eyecare nonprofit Orbis International is celebrating 20 years of partnership with the Macau community with the arrival of its Flying Eye Hospital for the first-ever simulation-based training project in Macau, the organization announced. The project will bring 70 ophthalmologists and nurses from eight Orbis partner hospitals across China to Macau for advanced training and mentorship aboard the Flying Eye Hospital and at Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau. Together, these professionals will go on to serve more than 245,000 patients in China annually, the announcement noted.
