Bobby Fischer wanted his own playing hall at the 1972 Chess Olympiad. The organizers refused, so the newly crowned World Champion stayed home.
Just weeks after Fischer's historic victory over Boris Spassky in Reykjavik, 63 nations gathered in Skopje, Yugoslavia, for the 20th Chess Olympiad. The Soviet team arrived without Spassky but brought an extraordinary lineup that included Mikhail Tal, Tigran Petrosian, Viktor Korchnoi, and a 21-year-old Anatoly Karpov making his Olympiad debut.
The Soviets ultimately claimed their eleventh consecutive gold medal, although Hungary kept the race very close until the final round.
Our 1972 Skopje Olympiad Series Chess Pieces recreate the distinctive design used at this historic tournament. With hand-carved 4.4-inch kings and a design rooted in Yugoslav chess history, they bring a fascinating chapter of the game's past back to the board.
