Upgrading From a 7K to a REAL 8K Axle? READ THIS 👇
Got a 7K axle that measures:
95 inch Hub Face
80 inch Spring Center
You might think you can order an 8K axle with the exact same measurements.
Not if you want the BIG 8K brakes.
Here’s why 👇
A true heavy duty Carter 8K uses:
3 1/2 inch axle tube
12 1/4 x 3 3/8 inch brakes
Those bigger brakes need more room.
Think of it this way:
95 minus 80 = 15 inches ❌ TOO TIGHT
96 minus 80 = 16 inches ✅ BARE MINIMUM
97 minus 80 = 17 inches ✅ WHAT WE STOCK
So when replacing a 95/80 7K, we normally move you to a:
97 inch Hub Face
80 inch Spring Center
That gives you room for the BIG 8K brakes and 3 1/2 inch tube.
If you see an 8K axle that is 95/80, ask what brakes are actually on it. It may be an 8K rated axle using the smaller brake setup instead of the big 12 1/4 x 3 3/8 inch brakes.
Moral of the story:
Just because someone calls it an 8K axle doesn’t mean every component is the same.
Check the tube. Check the brakes. Check the measurements.
