Lake Erie Will Be Locked Up By The End Of This Week 🧊
Ice on Lake Erie is spreading fast — and it’s about to speed up even more. With an even colder blast of arctic air arriving Friday into the weekend, this could easily end up being our coldest week since January 2018. When we’ve seen temperatures like this in the past, ice formation has taken off quickly, sometimes soaring toward that seasonal average of 94% coverage. (And no — the lake definitely doesn’t freeze that much every year!)
On Wednesday, gusty winds may shuffle the ice around a bit, breaking it up and pushing more of it toward the eastern basin. But the real story comes Friday through Sunday: calmer winds + brutally cold air = ideal conditions for rapid ice growth.
If you’ve been waiting for Lake Erie to lock up, this is the week it happens. Be CAREFUL Wednesday with those winds if you're thinking of getting out on the ice. Stay warm — the Big Freeze is in full effect. ❄️💨
