In 2016 while working on an ambulance as a Paramedic, my partner and I were dispatched to a very remote part of our county for a cardiac arrest. A middle aged man working outside had collapsed. No longer breathing and his heart no longer beating. His friends and coworkers immediately began CPR and called 911. A little over 33 minutes after he had collapsed his heart was able to be restarted. About half an hour after that his eyes were opening and he was trying to remove the breathing tube that we had placed in his throat to breath for him. The gentleman’s breathing tube was removed almost immediately upon arrival at the Emergency Room. He was 100% neurologically intact without any deficits. There is no way that this outcome would have been possible without his friends/coworkers performing high quality CPR.
The outcomes aren’t always this good. Sometimes hearts cannot be restarted. Sometimes they can but there are severe deficits. Sometimes the result is just giving someone a warm hand to hold as family is able to say their goodbyes in person.
CPR is not complicated, but there is a right and wrong way to do it. Getting proper training is well worth the small investment in time and money. It is something that EVERYONE should be trained in.
