Let's talk about something that isn't actually free… FREE SHIPPING. 📦😂
Welcome to episode 1 of Behind the Price Tag!
One thing I've learned from owning a small business is that shipping is a lot more expensive than people realize.
As a customer, I LOVE free shipping. Who doesn't?! But as a business owner, I also know that someone is paying for it, and that someone is usually the business.
At TK Ave, we offer free shipping on orders over $75. That doesn't mean USPS or UPS is delivering those packages for free. 😂 It means we're covering that cost.
And depending on the size of the order, where it's going, and how much the customer purchased, those shipping costs can really add up.
I'm not saying businesses shouldn't offer free shipping. We offer it because we know our customers appreciate it! But it's an expense we have to account for when figuring out what we're actually making on a sale.
That's why I wanted to start this series. I think people see a busy store or a bunch of online orders and automatically assume the business is making a ton of money.
But there's a big difference between making sales and making a profit.
And shipping is just ONE of the expenses that comes out of those sales.
So welcome to Behind the Price Tag, where we're talking about what it actually costs to run our little retail store in Idyllwild, California.
Follow along because we're going to break down a different expense in each episode!
