Anxiety and autism behaviors go hand and hand. As always, patience and understanding matter. What may look like a "behavior" from the outside may actually be someone trying their best to cope with anxiety or an environment that feels completely overwhelming.

With Hector, anxiety can look like closing his eyes and walking sideways, spitting, or much heavier stimming. His triggers can change, but babies crying and dogs barking have remained pretty consistent. And if one of us sneezes? Just know we're getting stared DOWN 😂

Over time, we've learned what helps him cope. Sometimes it's breathing exercises. Sometimes it's finding a quiet place to regulate. Timers can help when he needs to know when something will end, and giving him plenty of advance notice before a change in routine gives him time to prepare for what's coming.

We hope that by sharing pieces of our journey, we can continue bringing awareness to the everyday experiences of the autism community—both autistic individuals and their families—that people on the outside don't always get to see.

And to all of our families heading back to school, we're wishing you a smooth transition, lots of patience, successful coping, and as little anxiety as possible. 💙🧩

One day, one transition, one victory at a time 💙

Stimming is one of the things that can bring a lot of attention to an autistic person in public, but it's often simply a way of coping with an overwhelming world. Whether they're anxious, excited, overstimulated, or uncomfortable, stimming can help them regulate those feelings.

For Hector, that might look like hand flapping when he's excited, rocking when he's anxious, squeezing someone's arm, or humming loudly when he's overstimulated. Headphones, fidgets, and other sensory tools can also help make everyday sights and sounds a little easier to manage.

We may never fully understand what the world feels like through their eyes, ears, and bodies—but we can listen, be open to learn, be patient, and lead with empathy.

Our autistic loved ones deserve to feel safe being themselves not only at home, but out in a world that has so much to offer them.

Different doesn't mean wrong. Understanding creates acceptance 🧩💙

A very kind and giving community member Nichole Elmore reached out to us regarding a story she saw years ago and thought our community could benefit from it.....Sensory Backpacks for Emergency Personnel. Having an autistic loved one always comes with a fear of the day you are not able to be there with them...will someone be able to understand them, will they know what they need, communicate, the list and fears go on.

In an emergency situation you can be separated from your autistic child. A lot of times our first responders do not have the resources needed and we hope to make that small difference to help those autistic individuals and their families in those emergency situations.

With the help of Nichole, Jorge Estrada, Maeda Insurance and our Cobra Family we will be having a raffle to raise money to make these Sensory Backpacks. The backpacks will include essential items such as headphones, a weighted stuffed animal, sensory items, sunglasses, a communication board, a white board and marker. All money raised will be used to make as many backpacks as we can and will be readily available for any and all emergency personnel who want/need one.

Through the years we've learned a lot of the negative reactions you get in public when a loved one is autistic isn't because of the person having mal intention it's due to the lack of knowledge or exposure to the Autism World. This was all new to us with Hector....it took a lot of patience, understanding, and research. Yet we still learn something new everyday. Hector's needs constantly change, his sensory triggers change, his stimming behaviors change.

Autism is a spectrum and each case is different. We hope to use this platform and our pop up days to bring awareness to our community, create a safe space for other autism families and hopefully bring a little light to the world like Hector brings to us everyday 💙
