We want to address the situation regarding today’s Shriners Swap Meet/Car Show at Independence Center.
First, we want to be clear that we value the Ararat Shriners, appreciate their organization, and respect the work they do in the community. We would gladly welcome them back in the future. However, it is important that the facts are accurately stated.
The event was not cancelled by me personally. When the first representative arrived on site this morning, they did not have the authorization, contract, or proof of insurance available for review. At that time, security asked them to stop unloading items until they could produce the documentation needed to conduct the event (signed contract, insurance, etc.). The rep on site stated he did not have the contract and couldn't get access to it until 10am. I arrived on site at 5:50am and stated I would go to the office and figure things out. Shortly after, a different representative later arrived at the office, I was informed that their organization had already cancelled the event while in the middle of finding a resolution.
As the new General Manager, one of the areas I was brought in to strengthen was compliance and ensure that all events are conducted professionally, safely, and in accordance with the requirements of the City of Independence and our property. This includes all insurance and liability standards. These expectations are neither unreasonable nor optional. They are in place to protect everyone involved — organizers, vendors, attendees, tenants, and the property as a whole.
It is also important to note that no one from the organization came to the office or contacted management in advance before arriving this morning to begin setup. Clear communication, proper authorization, and required documentation are basic expectations for any event held on this property.
We understand the disappointment this caused for vendors, buyers, and supporters, and we regret the inconvenience. But professionalism, documentation, and insurance protocols must be followed by every organization, every time.
We remain supportive of community events and organizations like the Shriners, and we are open to future opportunities to work together, provided that all required procedures are followed in advance and in full.
