About Under the Glaze and it’s owners
Under the Glaze is the brainchild of Marlina Koonce and Amber McKibbin, Indiana artisans who create unique ceramic pieces that are functional works of art. They have been fast friends since their freshman year at Herron School of Art and Design. Since graduation, these artists have been busy collaborating in the classroom and studio, often discussing opening up a business of their own. So they finally made their plans official and hope you enjoy their special creations. Amber is greatly influenced by rich textiles, ornate patterns and henna designs in her work. By carving and using a slip trailer, she creates beautiful three-dimensional designs on her work, accented by underglaze painting and various glazes. Marlina is also influenced by textiles and attributes much of her inspiration to her grandmother, a retired clothing designer and seamstress. She creates her work by rolling fabric and lace in her clay resulting in gorgeous texture. Marlina is also a lover of buttons and will often use them as accents.

We are honored to have been asked by the folks at Penrod to chat with Justin Mack over at Axios Indianapolis about our work and partnership ahead of Penrod’s 16th annual art fair on the grounds of Newfields on Saturday, September 12th from 9A-5P.

We’re still in the thick of art fair prep with one last bisque firing before it’s all glazing this next week. This will be quite a time consuming step as we look at all the awesome Amaco Brent glaze options we have and make the big color decisions. We also have some new pieces we’re excited to debut (👀 much requested butter dishes and garden inspired bee baths).

We can’t wait to see all your shining faces in person at Penrod next week!

Once again apologies for the loooooooonnng social media absence, but as per usual (and is frankly our default) life has been busy. Also typical, we have not been idle in prepping for our two upcoming art fairs:

Our favorite time of the art fair season is here! Crisp cool mornings, bright beautiful sunshine, and amazing people at the !! It’s our biggest fair of our season and we have been working hard to make sure our shelves our stocked with everyone’s favorite mugs, our new mugs, and lovely . If you are in the Louisville area - come visit us Friday - Sunday at booth -737 on Fourth Street! Can’t wait to see you!
