Took a break from life and insta and enjoyed one of the purest and most magical regions of Italy, where the landscape is so pure, wild, and organic, and where the people are so kind, authentic, living a very simple happy life. The villages of Umbria, like most of Italy, are mostly medieval with relics and ruins dating back to 1st Century or even before Christ…Assisi, Gubbio, Rasiglia, Spello, all full of history and soul. Our favorite, where Fabrizio’s family originates, is Mucciafora, a village hidden in the mountains with a population of only 7 full time residents and approximately 50 people that come every Aug to get away from the chaos of Rome. In Mucciafora it’s as if time is frozen in the 1950s. At an altitude of 1200 meters up a very long gravel road, there is no grocery store, no cafe, no gas station, not one commercial structure, no air conditioning, with a church and homes built in 1200-1500 AD. They have home cooked community lunches and dinners. The wine and cheese is made by the locals, truffles are hunted by the local dogs. They gather in the square nightly to dance and play cards and games. No one is on their phones. When the piano is being played, everyone stops to sing. The men gathered around for hours to make a fresh wreath to honor the soldiers, a marching band hosted a procession and church to honor the village. We did yoga with a herd of sheep in the pasture nearby, stumbled upon cattle and their guardian dogs at the very top of the mountain where humans don’t normally go. It’s so pure and magical, a true blue zone. Everyone is so fully present, giving and sharing copious amounts of love, kindness, laughter. Even the butterflies slowed down for extended visits. ☺️ Blessed with the most beautiful company to explore this region and especially grateful to Fabrizio’s family who provide the most precious and magical hospitality.
