How do we get the bees out of the honey supers to extract the honey!?

Bee escape boards 🐝

We used the remainder of our day to add bee escape boards to the bee hives in preparation to remove the honey boxes for the last time this season. These boards are like a one lane road. The bees are able to travel through the “hole” and down into the nest. They aren’t able to get back up into the supers because of the screen on the triangle side.

We add these boards a few days prior to removing the boxes of honey. This ensures the bees have had plenty of time to cycle down through the escape board and onto the brood boxes (nest).

This time of year we have to bee very quick in the colonies. It is robbing season! Yellow jackets are plentiful and annoying and are looking for a free, easy meal. With the landscape drying up with available flowers and nectar, even the neighboring honeybee colonies will try to steal what they can.
Too much time in the hives can cause the entire apiary to begin robbing each other and cause total chaos. Once they start, usually nightfall is the only thing that will stop them. 😬

From what I seen in the colonies, the fall flow wasn’t too giving. I didn’t see much surplus honey in the supers. The fall flow allows the bees to start backfilling the brood nest where the queen has been laying eggs all summer. This forces her down into the bottom box and they fill the entire top box full of honey for their long winter break.

We also poked into a few of the hives, brood nest. Lots of capped brood where all our winter bees are being raised.

The colonies will continue to shrink as the days get shorter and cooler. We only have just over a month before we tuck them in for their long winter vacation. ⛄️

🌟UPDATE:🌟
Some pictures of the bees getting settled into their new home after I marked and released the queen. Also pictured are some of the combs that we removed from the tree and rubber banded into frames. The bees will secure and fill the remaining space in the frame with comb. They will even chew the rubber bands off off when they’re done. 😃
Next up a mite check to see their mite count. 🤓

📞 We got a call regarding a colony of bees in a tree.

This was an open air hive built by the amazing honeybee. 🐝

We were happy to help these folks out and save the bees at the same time. The homeowners were a pleasure to work with and even had a man lift on hand to assist the removal. This was definitely handy as the bees were 20-25’ up in a massive tree.

We were able to remove the bees and get them all settled into their new home. In the days to come we will give them a more close look over ensuring they don’t have mite issues and get them on par for winter preparations.

We caught another fascinating pollinator in action the other day!
The hummingbird clear wing moth. This moth clearly resemble hummingbirds, hence the name. This particular moth was enjoying some nectar from our phlox 🌺
