Alligator for Attention: starting Monday our new hours are in effect. Pretty much the same as summer hours - but we will be closed on Mondays. In October we will likely go hog wild and give ourselves a whole 2 days off šŸ˜®- but we will see how the rest of September unfolds. Meanwhile - come see us Tuesday through Sunday from 10-5pm.

Several years ago at the Land Oā€™Lakes Art center I saw the most pensive, introspective outdoor exhibit. It was called ā€œBefore I dieā€ and was deceptively simple. A blackboard with the prompt ā€œBefore I Die, I want to:ā€ followed by blank lines. Except they werenā€™t blank. Filled with unfulfilled dreams, whimsy, pain, joyful hopes - it made an incredible read - and was in some ways transformative. During the course of our renovation project - we had this huge blackboard that we were thinking of putting in the basement for storage in case weā€™d needed it in the future. I decided not to do that. Take a moment when you stop by and go on. Leave a note.

I have a confession to make. I tend to ā€¦. collect things. Most of the time - the items I collect areā€¦.. weird - like typewriters (I once had 12) and waffle irons (I think I have like 8) - and sometimes - itā€™s building materials. About 18 years ago - David and I saw an ad in the North Country Sun about some radiators. When we got to what was then Josephsonā€™s Nursing Home - it turned out they were the wrong kind of radiators, but the gentleman selling the radiators said: Do you need any tubs? (You were thinking I was going to say doors, werenā€™t you?) Well - we didnā€™t ā€œneedā€ any tubs but the visionary in me imagined a pedestal tub in our house so we got two (they are both still in the garage). While we were getting the tubs - he said ā€œHow about some old doors?ā€ and that is how we ended up with 13 oversized solid wood doors with beautiful Eastlake hardware. Over the years Iā€™ve used a couple of the doors to build things - most notably a divider between the bedroom and living room - but the rest of the doors waited patiently for a worthy project. In 2021 we used them to cover the open framing in the windows because plywood was going for $66 per sheet. After that - they went into the basement until 2 months ago. Weā€™re not quite done with the wall dividing the shop - but I think this is such a great use for the doors - and certainly unique. We have one more door left to paint and then David will install the last 3 doors and the ā€œwallā€ will be complete. Iā€™m still waiting on some book display easels - and we still have to install some lighting - but the vision is getting clearer every day. Thanks for your patience while we complete these upgrades and thanks for the kind words on what weā€™ve done so far.

Soā€¦. Iā€™m putting away some books I got (yes, I ordered more books even though the expansion is not quite done) and per usual - side quests prevail - look what I learned in this awesome edition of World of Weird - Guillotine themed jewelry was the rage in France. Oh look - everything old is new again! The Strike Gently Pin is either brilliant or inspired by these earrings. Iā€™d tag them if I knew how cause now I HAVE to know!

Another late night at the Moon. šŸŒ™
Well - we hoped to have everything ready for our 5 year anniversary (Tomorrow! šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«) but life is unpredictable, small town construction projects run into troubles, life happens and things donā€™t always go as planned. Perfection is the enemy of progress and while we would have LOVED to have everything done - well - it didnā€™t happen despite our best efforts. Cā€™est la vieā€¦
Tomorrow, September 1st will officially be Paper Moon Mercantileā€™s 5th Birthday. I have lots of thoughts about the past 5 years and lots of plans for the next 5 - we will hold off on having an official ā€œBirthdayā€ celebration until weā€™re ready with the addition - and celebrate both the milestone and the new and improved Paper Moon. šŸŒ™

Iā€™m feeling a little ā€¦ behindā€¦ more on that in a bit - but here are just a few of the recent arrivals.

The hype on these recipes is real. Chocolate pound cake with Caramel Icing? Yes, please. Blueberry Lemon Pie? Oh yes! Oatmeal Chocolate Toffee Shortbread? Are you joking? I need those right meow.

Beautiful story, gorgeous book.

Put magic into meal prep. Tasty combinations that will break up a boring routine and give your lunches a bit of excitement (but are still approachable and easy)

A very nice and illustrated edition of the Tao Te Ching - a calming path in a world that of late seems more fraught with troubles

You really canā€™t beet these recipes. Beet Cinnamon Buns? Okā€¦ Ćwikła? Ohhh - now youā€™re talking! The ā€œunofficialā€ Schrute Farms cookbook will have you questioning if there is anything beets canā€™t do.

Youā€™re gonna need that one to cook some of the recipes in the previous book.
